star polyps need actinics?

if im not mistaking no coral needs actinics we just have them in our fixtures for our viewing pleasure since they make corals colors "pop" more

Well, yes and no. This is a bit more of a complicated subject. To be honest, I probably would have made the same comment just a year ago. However, I am convinced certain stony corals, and even softies can alter their pigment depending on the length of time they are exposed to a bluer spectrum of light. Also, I'm learning that all corals benefit from a real light cycle including dusk, dawn, nighttime(blue) and even a moonlight phase- so in that sense, actinic can promote health/color.

But yes, the most basic answer is no, it is not needed. I ran my 8ft softie dominated reef for 8 months with no actinic supplementation of any kind.
