Star question

I have both colors and they seem to be equally hardy. If buying from a LFS, you may be better off with the red ones. The collection practices on the blue's are known for being very harsh and they usually die (for no other apparent reason) within 6 months of their purchase from a LFS. If you see someone selling one on the forums that has been in their tank for 6mos. or more, make sure to jump on it asap, even if they are charging LFS prices for it.

I have 7-8 red linckia's (most are just legs) and 2 large blue linckia's in a 29 gal at the moment, waiting for a tank upgrade in progress. If you decide to keep it in a 20L, then you may have to target feed it w/ some of Rod's food, b/c you probably won't be able to feed the tank heavily enough for it to get enough food off of the sand without jeopardizing the water quality.

Don't want to sell any just yet. They have been keepin' my 29gal clean and I kinda need the help b/c it is overstocked at the moment. Plus, I did buy these from a LFS a couple months ago, so who knows, they may not make it, but all appears well so far. They are growing at a pretty decent rate and once they get full grown (or close to it) I would be interested in selling one.

As far as I know, they will survive on detritus as long as enough is present. BB tanks would probably be a bad idea for these, but I could be wrong.

I bought 'em that way from Splash of Life. From what I understand they can drop them from their bodies under stress (not sure how true that is though) or it is a mechanical injury. I love getting the legs b/c they are your best bet for a hardy linckia. Basically any starfish that can grow a new body from its severed leg has to be a very hardy specimen to survive such trauma.
