Starphire Glass Issue

I would like to know how many of you have this problem of pitting and how many dont.
who were the people you bought it from?

I am now in the midst of ordering a 96 x 42 x 36 3/4inch starphire glass tank for my home. If this is a REAL PROBLEM with this type of glass, then you must ask if its really worth going with it or just ordering regular glass. I have been assured from my tank maker that this will NOT be an issue as the starphire glass he gets is inspected with a fine tooth comb. I will personally inspect these pieces of glass under the lights in all directions before I let him ship and build it on site. He knows what I will be looking for. I have NOT seen any of this type of thing happening in any of his other tanks who my friends and stores have also for a few. Im hopeing that these occurences are limited to your suppliers. The more we SCREAM about it the more action will be taken to rectify this situation. Lets not make this a topic of acrylic over starphire glass. anyone who wants glass will get glass and vice versa.

I have two very small pits in the glass of my tank that has 3/4 in low iron front. I love the front glass even still. These pits developed after the tank had water in it I believe. No further pits have developed. I bought the tank from AO and do not blame them at all for the pits, nor have I ever brought it up.

this depends on how many other people have had the same problem with the same distributer.
We will soon find out how many and which distributers. This will ensure they check things before they ship or build it for us.
im sure its not their fault, but they should be aware of this.

WOW kinda of worry ....right now !!!

I was lloking to get a 96x 48 x 30 with diamond glass on the front
from aquarium obsessed ( WILL ) but i have been hearing all this pitting stuff and now i am like freking out !!!

any thoughts ??
:bum:

I do not believe that this has anything to do with the tank manufacture specifically. I said before I believe these pits (really just one noticeable one) developed after water was in the tank. Is this an issue for the glass manufacture? Yes it is.

If you are nervous about it then go with regular glass. Even with the one noticaeble pit in the glass I still prefer the low iron glass.

I am not sure what can be done here on the tank manufacturer level except maybe filling the tanks that have low iron and waiting to see if any pits develop. They usually occurr in the first month if it is going to happen. There are some issues of which side are wet vs. dry, but I am not the expert here.

Also, there is a possibility that these pits were there before hand and just went unnoticed by all including myself until the tank was wet with MH shining down. I do have picture of when I just filled the tank with water and I do not notice the one noticeable pit.

Here is a picture when just filled:

Here is a picture of the tank today. See if you can find the pit, it is very hard to in a photograph(I will post later where it is):

The pits are technically called conchoidal fracture. What causes them specifically could be many things.
