I really don't want to sum up the total... But the smaller the tank, the less the start up cost. But the smaller the tank the more time you will need to spend on your tank. But I think Reef Keeping isn't cheap at all. Oh and the electric bill too!

There are many variables here, but I think that $50. per gallon is a fair estimate.

it seems to me that the electricity bill at my house went up around $30 a month since my 54 has been set up and thats only pc lighting 130 watts compared to many MH systems that would easily use double that many watts.

Im in process of setting up my first tank.. my 30g will total about $1400 to get to the point where I add livestock. This is for a reef system, a fish-only or fowlr could be somewhat less expensive.

I havent budgeted further, but I expect to spend several hundred more in the months following the initial startup for little things that were cool, but too much for the initial cost
