Starting a 10g

So i'm starting a simple 10g FOWLR for my clown pair, with a small clean-up crew and probably a shrimp or two later on.

I have the sand, LR, and an AquaClear 30 Powerhead in there right now. I think I'd like to buy some sort of filter to catch anything floating in the water that could be pretty easily maintainable, and I'd also like a nice but cheap light hood for the tank as well. Any ideas? I'm lookin to go as cheap as possible here. I don't need anything spectacularly expensive, I just want something that will polish the water a little and light the tank sufficiently.

on my 10g reef I just used a standard 10g hood and used 2 coralife 10w screw-in compact fluorescent

If i just order like a regular perfecto hood will that work?

I'm really in need of guidance more along the lines of the filter. What kind?

You can run carbon and as for the hood, most standard hoods have knockouts for things like hang on filters and heaters

I'm assuming that these filters are pretty much all the same for the most part? I'd be fine with that penguin one?

I do not use a filter on my 10 gallon. Weekly water changes of 2-3 gallons are enough. I run two small powerheads (100gph) and I have 20#s of live sand and 12 to 15 pounds of live rock. I will occassionally drop in some carbon in a bag for a few weeks.

If you really want a filter, you could add a sponge to a powerhead to trap the stuff it sucks up. You will need to clean the sponge weekly.

For lighting, it depends on what you want to keep. I have a coralife 40 watt PC. I have a few zoas, mushroom and some star polyps.

Good luck.
