I have a 5 1/2 gallon tank set up in my room as a volcano shrimp tank for my seahorses, however the volcano shrimp have been contaminated with a seahorse desease, so the are no longer of use to me... The tank is VERY UGLY!! full of hair algea and grose grimy things lol. THere is currently no filter on the tank or air pump. I would like to turn the tank into a Nice looking SPS nano tank. Would this be possible? Do SPS corals need more space? I would upgrade the light to a T-5 flourescent strip light w/ actinics. How many watts would i have to have to keep SPS corals? i would also get a very small skimmer i beleive that they make skimmers just for nano tanks now. I dont think i would put fish in it... could i get a small say clown in the tank? could i keep the shrimp in it? Am i going about this all wrong? any help/ suggestions would be GREATLY APRECIATED!

For the 5.5g I would personally go with a 70w MH 14k and be done with it. That way you can keep a full range of corals and it wont break the bank in the process. The shortest length of the t5's are 24"s and that is much more than needed. First thing you need to do is get rid of the algae and get the tank stable before adding any corals. You can add a refugium to help soak up the nitrates and also do water changes to get the parameters back to 0. Only then will you really be able to add corals and have success.

For a 5.5 I'd tear down the tank, toss the rock and sand, and start over. You'll spend more money trying to cure the problems than the rock/sand is worth.
