Starting a 5 gallon reef tank.

Hello guys new to this forum. I currently have a 29g reef tank w a pro clear 75 sump w skimmer. I'm running a current USA orbit 36 in led light. I m wanting to move one of my clowns and my condy into a five gallon nano. My questions are: 1-how much water should I change per week with a five gallon
2-if I use pew cured rock from my lfs and water out of my old tank in my next water change and new live sand how long if any should my nitrate cycle last? I need to get this Condy and this agressive clown out of my tank so I don't have to worry about the condy stinging my corals. It stayed out forever but now has been moving around a lot? Any help appreciated guys thank you.

I'd do a gallon a week (20%)

cycle would be short. you should have no ammonia off the bat, but nitrite and nitrate may need to stabilize. I would guess a week, as long as there isn't a lot of die off during the swap. hard to tell though. each tank is different as you know.

sorry, edit!

just spaced and just now read it was pre-cured from a lFS and new live sand.

expect a decent amount of die off from the rock. New live sand will still take a while to completely seed. The ammonia may not be present initially but can rise from the die off so monitor it closely before transferring. It's such a small tank and bad things can happen quick. I would say you may be fine in a week but if you need to get them out quick, the ammonia and nitrite would be the concern.

I glossed over your first post and thought you were transferring rock and sand from another system. Sorry about that

I would guess

One thing you could do, if the tanks are close together of course, is connect them both to the sump. I do this, makes transferring things between them really easy, and also I don't have to worry about dealing with topping off the smaller tank all the time because my water volumes are combined.

Of course, get your cycle done first before you connect!
