Starting an aquarium maintenance business

I love this hobby, and I mean everything about it. I'm also very realistic in understanding that a brick-and-mortar store is simply too cost prohibitive in order to start from scratch and will bleed me dry financially.

I am sick and tired of the corporate rat race, and I have begun to seriously consider starting an aquarium maintenance business with the primary focus on saltwater/reef tanks, however I will handle freshwater as well. I'd like to focus primarily on commercial clients such as doctors offices, etc....but would of course service residential clients also.

I've done general research in understanding what my upfront equipment costs would be along with ongoing expenses such as gas/vehicle maintenance along with liability insurance for the business/vehicle, and they seem fairly minimal compared to other business ventures. My largest expense would of course be a vehicle that can accommodate large water tanks, but outside of that, the costs for equipment are very minimal.

My profit centers would of course be the service itself, but I'd like to also secure wholesale accounts to purchase equipment for new installations and charge markups accordingly. I'd also like to subcontract aquarium builders to build my customers tanks and earn a commission on the referral.

I wanted to gather general input from the Reef Central community just to see if anybody has been specifically involved in this or if you have any advice that you'd like to provide regarding marketing my services, additional profit centers, etc.

If i do enact this business plan, I of course would start small and keep my full time job while building my clientele in order to stay afloat.

Gathering clients can be slow...even slower if you don't work at a local fish store. If you could find the nicest fish store around you that does a lot of maintenance and see if you can work on their weekends, get in good with the boss , and start gathering clients.

I'd be more interested in paying a commission to an established LFS for a referral. They are in business to make money just like me...and that is 100% profit for them subbing the maintenance out to me. There would of course be terms to the agreement.

I'm also willing to pound the pavement and cold call....which is something not alot of people can do or handle. I have a background in sales, so it's very helpful.

if i understand correctly, you're suggesting "stealing" the LFS customers?

Not at all....the fish store I worked at did not want the maintenance or the headaches of customers calling in the middle of the night...and gave them to their employees.
Its weird how people hear things.

ok....sounded like a good plan though..... Get job in LFS, work weekends when boss not around, tell LFS's customers," store charges X for maintenance, but i charge 10% less and do a better job, just don't tell the boss".

Here the local fish stores do well because of the Onsite maintenance. This is true for many businesses service oriented.I am not sure you will get work thru a lfs unless you become a direct employee. I also would assume there would not be many of these positions available. Depending on where you live would make a Huge Difference on the Client numbers attainable as well. Here in Louisville Kentucky or the Whole "KENTUCKIANA AREA" You would have a paying hobby that you like at Best.We have some very good LFS and almost all of them do maintenance as well.

I agree it would be a amazing Business if you could get the Clients to make it viable.
Then there is the Dealing with Customers issues. I have worked in peoples home most of my life and a Sales person type personality is doomed to failure in my opinion.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes . maybe one day we can start a Louisville KY Franchise of your Corp....

This is despicable dishonest and Down right Wrong....

Sounds like capitalism to me.

if you are working at a place that installed windows but you work inside sales. and you offer to install windows in the side while you are at work for a potential customer You Need to be Fired and Sued for this... I had someone who worked for me do this in the past .

If you get the customers honesty and no on the Companies dime you are correct.

sorry for such a off topic post...

I don't think you understood me bud,I don't know how it works at all the fish stores in the world, but the fish store I work at my boss gave away the maintenances because they did not want the headaches....he would give them to the first person that answer the phone and wanted a maintenance job...of course the fish store I work that was one of the best in all of Georgia...they didn't need the maintenances.

My sales background is also coupled with customer service ( been an insurance adjuster for 8 yrs) so I know a thing or two in dealing with people 😄

Seriously though....can we stay on topic and not talk about stealing customers? I'm looking for valid input and unfortunately I haven't gotten much.

I'm not sure how the business is in Florida, but here in SoCal it is very competitive and new comers to the industry often see their businesses fail.
