Starting from scratch

I am wanting to setup a salt water tank for corals and a couple of fish. I've been reading and watching lots of you tube vids. I have a friend who had a salt water tank, he is moving out of town and he sold all of his fish and coral.
He gave me all of his rocks (60 lbs) that have been is a container for about 6 months without any water. From what I've been reading about reviving the rocks I need to place the rocks in a large container with aquarium ready salt water, a few healthy live rock, strong pump and heater, monitor the ph, ammonia levels, etc. and water changes for about two months. After a couple of months the rock should be live and ready to start the cycling process in an tank. Am I missing something or do I have this all wrong? My second question is I am planning on setting us a 55 gallon tank which is (L) 45" x (W) 14.5" x (H) 22". Is this tank to narrow or not wide enough for a reef tank?
Thanks for your feedback

If it’s me I would just clean the rocks using a garden hose or pressure wash. Let dry for a week or so. Put in the 55 gallon tank & let it cycle that way or you can do it your way. Either way is good I think. The tank is a bit narrow to me. It’s your tank. Also drill it if not, so you add a overflow & a sump
