I'm in the process of building a 250g reef tank and was looking for someone to build a steel stand. Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks,
Jeremy

That reminds me.....I was going to model and run a FEA on the classic wooden 2x4 and 4x4 framed stand compared to a 1" square tubed one.

I ran into a thread a while back of some people not thinking the steel would be the stronger of the two.

Good to see someone going that route!!!

Sorry, I don't know of any fabricators in this area......

I've been around, just busy with school....but now am finished.......forever!!!!

I have to admit, I have been on here more in the last few days than in the last few months combined.

How have you been?

mikid, Thank you very much. I have been having a tough go of finding someone with even a semi reasonable price. I am exploring the option of going with a custom furniture builder that also does aquarium stands and canopies, but I may go back to the steel stand. The only problem with the steel stand is that I will still need to deal with the skinning, which I considered doing myself. Only problem with that happens to be my kids and lack of time to undertake that additional task. May still do steel, and if I do, I will call him.
Thanks for the referral,
Jeremy

On another note, I have never been to any kind of meeting or even met anyone from a group like MARS. Mind informing me on the details, ie: what the group does like meetings and such, are there many members, how one goes about joining, etc. I need to look into something like that as I am getting more involved in the hobby again.

Oh yes as just about every stand under each tank has proven it can be

A steel framed stand has some advantages over a wooden frame:

A36 Steel has a Breaking strength in tension & compression of about 400 MPa each compared to Douglas Fir with 2 MPa and 26 MPa respectively.

Is a consistent material, (things break at inconsistencies like sharp corners, knots etc.)

Mechanical fasteners can not provide a more secure, distributed transfer of energy through the joint as welding.

All this adds up to needing a smaller material volume to achieve the same strength, which under a tank....the more room you can get the better.

But most people have more wood experience which makes them more comfortable working with it than metal, the tools needed and skill required to DIY tend to be easier to come by and wood is still "relatively" inexpensive.

And yes, powdercoating is the ONLY way to finish it.
