Here is my 36 Gallon Bow. It is in the cycling process with 13 lbs of LR, 20 lbs of LS, and 19 lbs of non-live rock.

Filtration- right now is two 50 gallon aqueon HOB filters

Movement- is a 50 gallon rated powerhead

Heat- 200w aqueon (currently broken) another one should be at my doorstep today or tomorrow which means my water is at 69 degrees which I think doesn't hurt the cycle process just maybe slows it down a bit.

I wanna know what fish to stock it with my ideas are
-Clown (maybe pair)
-Royal Gramma
-Cardinal
-Fire Shrimp
-Basic cleaner crew (snails)
-some sort of angel or butterfly fish (longnose butterfly: but maybe too big)

-if the butterfly is a no potentially a boxfish/cowfish/puffer one of the three if there is such thing as a dwarf species of it. At the LFS i noticed some babies wasn't sure how big they got.

All responses are appreciated!

Also, will the rocks that I have start to grow stuff on them naturally, or is the only way to make it actually look like a reef... to go out and buy every frag from LFS.

I'd get a pair, fine
-Royal Gramma
Fine, may defend his 'area'
-Cardinal
What species?
-Fire Shrimp
Fine

Your tank is not large enough for butterflies or most angels, and butterflyfish are not exactly reef safe or easy to keep, one of these three species of angelfish might fit- Centropyge Argi, C. Aurantonotus, & C. Acanthops. Angels may nip at corals though.

Most cowfish and boxfish grow to 1ft or more, so they would be too large for your tank, and most puffers grow too big as well, but a Valentini Pufferfish, Canthigaster Valentini, would fit in your tank, but it may eat or nip at your shrimp, snails, coral, etc. Also may nip fish fins
All responses are appreciated!

Live rock and dry rock won't magically pop out corals (that'd be so cool if it did though!), so you'd need to get coral frags or colonies from your LFS or online.

Well I realize it wont start growing corals, but things like sponges or mushrooms? Things that would grow on the undersides of the rock out of the light, do those grow naturally or what?

-as for the cardinal maybe a Pajama or a Banggai

What other fish would I be able to add besides the clown(s) and cardinalfish

I want to have about 4-5 fish in the tank preferably. I heard damsels are a pain in the butt and aggressive and chromis are pretty cool, but not big enough tank to have a school.

Also how is my aquascaping? Is this a good layout? Is it safe? I did the poke test firmly on each rock and none budged so I assume it is, but some diggers can really dislodge stuff easily I hear.

Banggai- Fine, single, or mated pair
Pajama- Fine, a small group is preferred, maybe 3 for your tank.

Looks good, and I'd get some more rock, to spice things up a bit and allow more hiding places, try getting rocks that has texture similar to this, and put them on top of your rocks that you have now, to give your tank more texture. Though, it's up to you of course

You could go for any of these fish, with an approximate total of 5 fish max, before you do though, let me know the fish you pick (whether on this list or not) so I can determine if aggression will occur, for example you couldn't have a Bicolor Blenny and a Tailspot Blenny together.

Here's what I'd do in your situation of filtration- unless you are already doing this, doing something si=milar to this, or already know this

Do NOT replace the cartridges every month, that is basically throwing away biological filtration. The companies put carbon in the cartridges on purpose, so you have to replace them every month and give them more money, carbon leeches the contaminants that it absorbed back into the water after a month or so. Get some filter floss (look for 100% Polyester Quilt Batting at Walmart, they have huge bags for $8 and $13), biological media in a media bag (such as Seachem Matrix or Fluval Biomax), and filter sponge/s (click here for examples). Replace the filter floss as needed, which is usually 3-7 days, don't touch the biological media, and wash the filter sponge in the water you take out from a water change. Put the biological media in with your cartridges for a month or so, then you can discard the cartridges. Or you can get a sump, protein skimmer, filter socks, etc. which would be better. I think your flow is fine, but I don't know what brand of powerhead it is. What kind of lights do you have?

I added 2 more LR's probably about 2 lbs total. The Powerhead I believe is a top fin, I am not home right now, I am at work so not sure. I ordered a HOB protein skimmer/refugium setup which I am not sure how good it will be, but I was curious so I am going to get it. I am going to get rid of one of my aqueon filters and put the refuge/PS in that spot. I believe its about 15" long.

Here is what tank looks like

I am still in setting up phase... Background is not attached to tank yet as you can see havent decided between blue/black. Also the top of the tank is going to be that egg crate that you see on the right, but I haven't finished cutting it to fit the top. Also one of those aqueon filters that you see in the back is going to be replaced with a HOB refuge/skimmer which I am going to test out.

What do you think of the layout?

I would go with a pair of Firesish or maybe a geometric pygmy perchlet. The perchlet might try to bully any other bottom dwelling fish like a goby or blenny...

Now that is some cool rockwork! The first picture didn't do justice. It makes me think of a section of a sand flat, with a few rock piles in it, that gets exposed to the tide everyday.
