Stocking ideas for 50 cube...

So I've been stumped on what fish I should start with and would like to reach out for suggestions. I do plan on getting a few soft corals in the future. So ideally, I'd like to start with relatively reef safe fish.

I do have a hitchhiker pom pom crab that my wife loves so I don't think putting him in the sump will be an option.

Please any and all fish ideas are welcome. Thanks.
 
Added note:

I'd like to keep the bio-load light to medium. I'm not a "lazy" aquarist, but I'd like my first tank to not take every minute of my free time.
 
Clowns, a sand sifting goby if your ok with mounds of sand and don't place corals too low that might get burried. Maybe a reef safe wrasse. Browse through live aquaria and see what catches your eye. Look at the nano section.
 
Midas blenny, longnose hawkfish, yasha goby, royal gramma, clown pair (not maroon), chalk bass, fairy wrasse, pygmy angel. Obviously not all of these but I would try to utilize the space. Right, so open swimmer, ground dweller, fish that perch etc.
 
The gobies are cute additions. And I find my pair of pajama cardinals and single banggai cardinal stay right out in the open, which I like. I have a 54 and they seem happy in there. But they are not as colorful as some other fish. But they are hardy.
 
Thanks for the ideas. I've looked at liveaquaria but it seems that their guidelines for size of fish and tank size can be very different from what hobbyist recommend.
 
Would a cleaner shrimp be out of the question with a pom pom crab in the tank. I have about 30 lbs of LR and plan to get up to 40ish. Just didn't know if anyone has had issues with crabs and cleaner shrimp.
 
I've actually run into this problem too, seems like options are so limited due to diet or territory or aggression. IMO it's best to learn as much as possible about as many species as possible then go to a LFS and see what they have and make a choice there. Only get fish that you know will be compatible but still allow for that gut instinct. For a 50g a nice mix of basslets, maybe some clowns, small gobies (shrimp pair is a must IMO), a small wrasse or two, an maybe a larger showpiece fish like a coral beauty or flame angel ( those are reef safe WITH CAUTION though). Generally just choose one or two must haves and see where you can go from there.
