Got a 40 gallon with some coral, pair of clowns, Cardinal and a yellow tang. After doing some research, it seems that the tang will need a bigger tank. So I will be either be returning or trading him for something more compatible with my tank to my lfs where I got him. Any suggestions on fish?

Yes, you will need to return the tang eventually. You could keep it for a few months, but I know many folks on here discourage that. Flasher wrasses are really cool imo, you could try a mccoskers flasher. Midas blennies and firefish are also cool. Id say get a jawfish, but it looks like your sand bed isnt deep enough :/ What kind of cardinal fish do you have?

Halichoeres chrysus would get you the yellow color.

I like the midas blenny, gramma, and wrasses suggestions so far

+1 on the chrysus, mine is a great fish, super interesting to watch him pick stuff off of rocks and his eyes move independently. He's very active during the day. Also, I would suggest a firefish or an azure damselfish (although I have read sometimes they can be aggressive). The azures have a striking color, and I have yet to have a temperament problem with mine. The firefish is hardy (I had a problem with biological filtration in my quarantine tank and it survived an ammonia spike) and nice to look at, but overall not very active.
