In the process of planning and building my first marine system, will start out as fowler but expand in time to a reef

40g breeder DT
40g breeder sump(at least half of it for refugium)
currently looking at either a bubble magus curve 5 or a
reef octopus classic 110 Int for skimmer
50 pounds dry rock from marco rocks(acid washed and currently curing)
10 pounds of hand picked live rock from LFS
2 inch aragonite sand bed (refugium will have 5 inch sand bed)

Proposed stocking list

wheelers shrimp goby+skunk pistol shrimp
redtailed cardinal
Neon blue goby
tailspot blenny
2 ocellaris clownfish(wife insists)
banded possum wrasse

fish will be added in above order, approx every 45 days
approx 45 days of qt(TTM and observation)

is this going to be to many fish? I want to do this right the first time.
any and all comments and suggestions are welcome.

I'm not sure what a redtailed cardinal is. What's the species name? If it's got a big mouth, I'm not sure if it's compatible with the very tiny neon goby.

I'm cautious about the clownfish being added before the possum wrasse. Clownfish are damselfish, which are rather aggressive.

This is what I did with my 55: I partitioned off a quarter of the tank using a divider made of plate rock, so I could make a 3-4 inch deep mixed rubble bed for my barbershop pole gobies and pistol shrimp to use, so I could have a 1 inch sandbed through the rest of the tank. You don't have to do this, but I'd suggest adding some sort of rubble for the pistol shrimp to add to its burrow.

That list is fine. The only thing I would do is put the wrasse in before the 2 clowns. Reason being, is the clowns will have the possibility to pair up and once they do they can become aggressive.

The only thing that concerns me is the similar body shape of the gobies and blenny. That could potentially be an issue.

I can switch the order of wrasse and clowns. Is it possible to add more fish? or is this the limit for the size of the system I'm planning

In my 40b with 20g sump I have

2x mocha clowns
1x Cherub Angel
1x Golden Midas blenny
1x Hector's goby
1x McCosker's wrasse
Soon to add
1x Royal Gramma

I also have a male black sailfin molly in my sump I need to get another female for him so they can have live birth to give additional live food to my other fish.

I will also be swapping back and forth with a buddy a matted file fish for eating aiptasia.

My parameters are very good and I've got a mixed reef with mostly LPS corals and everything is doing great.

Here's the link to my tank

Just remember to get fish that have their own niche in the system and be careful of getting other fish with similar body shapes.
