hey all.

So ive had my tank up for a little over a year now. and since the first week of putting the liverock in the tank Ive heared ticking after i feed and when the lights go off.

At first I thought it was hermits falling and hitting glass.
After awhile, i thought mantis? pistol shrimp?

nothings ever came up missing that im aware of...

I have thousands of those tiny snails (collistias or somthing like that?)

and i kind of imagine one of thosde snail shells breaking open everytime i hear it.

well its been a full 13 months now and ive still never saw a hitchhiking shrimp/mantis or anything else i havent found already by now.

Tonight the ticking was REALLY loud and happened at least 5 times, any ideas???

possible to have a mantis and never know? pistol more likely? anything else that mkes cracking noises??

thanks!!

Maggie :D

Probably a stomatopod... It is possible not to see the leftovers because some will actually hoard the shells and their molts. If it was in the juvi stage it will just now be getting big enough (depending on type) that you will start noticing missing critters. :eek1: Good luck, I hope its a pistol.

more of a cracking.. i donno.. no, its a really loud tick. it always sounds exactly the same (why i was hoping it was a pistol shrimp shooting air thru its clow.. but i still should have seen it after a year no?)

Not necessarily. There are a lot of small pistol shrimp that live in rock crevices. They're very sensitive to light & only come out after dark (if at all).

what kind of heater do you have?... i spent quite a bit of time trying to track down what was making a random click every once in a while. with all the hitchhiker stories i was looking for a shrimp when i really had to look no further than my finnex heater cycling on and off.

the clicking is def in the back right corner, heater is left front. but that would have been great lol ive changed heaters too and the click is always there :)

i have a very annoying ticking in my tank too...mine is from my stupid SQWD going from side to side..

but come to think of it...do shrimp shed their exoskeletons? today when icame home from work i noticed what looked like a casting of a shrimp floating in the water column..thenit got sucked into my CL and was gone...

My guess is that its probably a pistol shrimp. I have something in my tank that makes clicking noise, but I've never been able to spot it (lots of attempts with the red LED light) . . . I've assumed that its a pistol shrimp since nothing has ever turned up missing.

Yes, shrimp molt (shed their exoskeleton).

When some of my small snails get too close to a powerhead, they click against the side of the tank. It really scared me until I watched and realized the shell hitting the glass matched the sound!

i second that quincy...i just added my snails and such today and damn the clicking they make against the side of the tank is loud...kind like hitting the glass with a coin..(please dont test that sound on your tank though, i am sure the fish and such dont like it..LOL)

i have definately spotted the shrimp..there are two...in separate rocks..i am going to shake the larger one out tomorrow...if he is a good one i will throw him back in...if a mantis...well..i dont know what i will do with him...
