i am a complete newbie to all of this

finally after a year of agonizing over what to get , I got a small tank started. if i do ok, will jump up to a large tank and keep the small tank as a quarantine

i have to treat my water for chlorine and chloramine.

How long can I keep containers of treated water around? Thats the only way i can trust the wife and/neighbor when i go away to top off the evaporated water.

weeks? months?

First of all Welcome! :)

Second, it is easier for a newbie to handle larger tank, because it contains more water volume, so bad things happen a bit slower then in smaller tanks.

Third, I would advise against using treated tap water. Besides chlorine/chloramine it has tons of other nasty things that will accumulate in tank, and you'll have trouble down the road. Use RO/DI water, you could get a unit, or buy it at LFS or grossery store. Other choice is to use distilled water (again from grossery store). By all means DO NOT use spring water. :)

--edit--

RO/DI or distilled water could be stored in closed contaners for months.
