Stray Voltage in my TANK... OUCH!

SOME THING IN MY TANK IS SENDING AND ELECTRICAL CURRENT...
i have just installed 2 Seios... i think it might be from those... i have a small cut on my thumb and i can only feel it when my thumb hits the water in the display... at first i was thinking it was just a reaction from the salt... but when i put a small amount in a cup... the reaction was not there... so i know for sure it is something in the tank... since the Seios are the only pumps in the tank running off voltage... im sure it might be one of those 2... how will this effect the fish and corals in the tank... i have been using the Seios for about 5 days now... :(

Rio pumps man......I remember you mentioned you have a Berlin skimmer, those usually come with Rio pumps. I got a bad shock when I was running a rio pump on a CSS125. I did as I mention below....and it was the dang pump.

Disconnect every electrical appliance one by one and keep sticking your thumb in there till you find the direct source.

**** this isnt effecting the fish too harsh is it... i will be tracking down the pump that is causing the issue and removing it...

start unpluging things one by one till you find it...It shouldn't hurt anything in the tank, only you;)

Sieo's, Rio's, their the same, don't care what anybody say's. I have had both burn up in my tank.

It can irritate fish. Some of the more delicate fish for stray voltage are tangs. Sometime they will develop HLLE, and IME cause certain fish to jump, and eventually end up out of your tank. :(

ok...strange... its NOT the pumps... wt*... i tracked it to one of those multi plug strips tho... i will let you know whats up... unless i fry first :p

ok... i moved some wires... reconnected EVERYTHING... the voltage is GONE... but i was unable to find the source... most likely it was a wire that was improperly connected... the pumps are running... no stray voltage... i have only had this cut on my thumb for about 14 hours... I have no idea how long this has been going on un detected! so im assuming this is why i was unable to keep a smaller blue tang before... the fish was acting very strange when introduced into the tank and died within 4 days, not to mention a Purple tang... but my SailFin is super active still.... sad to say that the Blue Tang that was in my QT was also dead this morning.... i got him from Gabe (Bebo) and was treating him for MHLLE as well... (the stray voltage was in the QT to when i stuck my thumb in there:( )

but lucky enough the issue is fixed. Sad i had to lose another fish in the process.

i think i have a Berlin in the closet.... but im running a HOB REDSEA Skimer... not tryin' ta brag ya know :p

this prolly explains why my fuzzy leather closed up and hasn't came out in a while! bet he will be back out withen 24 hours!:mad2:

will it also help with any stray voltage in the tank... will it take away from the stress on the fish.... if not... a good volt wont hurt (for too long :p) im more concerned about the stress on the fish really... if i wasnt getting shocked... im sure i would have never known there was even a issue with the wires... now if i come in my room and it smells like stew... i might not be too quick to dive right in :D

i think i found it... it was one of my Seios... glad the issue was found... took all day...+ plenty of rewiring...~sigh... now time for the Grudge II :D [insert funny moving eye with numeral 2]

Hi guys,

Regarding the grounding probe, wouldn't this cause a GFCI circuit to trip prematurely?

I'm asking because we wouldn't his set-up to crash because the power tripped due to stray AC current seeking ground.

I'm not an elelctrician, but it seems to me that I've read somewhere here to NOT install a ground probe on systems hooked to GFCI circuits for this reason.

Can any electricians here verify this?

^^ good point bongQ... i think i would be better off testing my water w/ a volt meter before i touch the tank...

RIGHT WHEN YOU THINK YOU FOUND THE ISSUE....YOURE WAY WRONG!....

IS IT POSSIBLE THE STRAY VOLTAGE COULD BE COMING DIRECTLY FROM THE OUTLET BEHIND THE TANK!?!?!?!?! ***

LM@O... IT WAS COMING FROM MY PC's... i guess SOMEHOW water got into one of them and was transfering the current... WTH is that about...!

Well, it sounds like your lighting fixture is properly grounded.

Since you tanks ground is all common, when your lighting shorted to ground, then that fed back into water via another item plugged in on the same circuit (like a pump).

Glad you found the cause.

sigh~ looks like its time for a used set of MH's :D
got the pump to work again as well... had to pull it apart and do some manual spinning of the rotery wheel... hope it dont fall apart on me... thats $150 to replace by itself...
