Stray voltage?

just a lil background info,

last night at about 11pm i was laying in bed with my cat when i heard a noise that is almost impossible to discribe, it was almost like a shuunk. it was even odder cause my cat jumped up and look at the tank like something was wrong. i looked at my water height in the sump of the 55 and said to myself "if that waterline goes lower something is wrong" becuase i was suspecting a crack in the tank. fast forward to 1:15am. i wake up to the noise of the return sucking air. i thought it was very strange and got up to TO. was i was toping off, all of a sudden the tank starts overflowing like crazy, all onto the floor. i instantly look up, for whatever reason, and see 2 snails (remind me of the margarita ones i bought from Erik but i bought them under another name off of reefcleaners.org. you know what im talking bout justin, the really big fat ones i had to keep flipping over.) stuck in the overflow tub blocking flow. i remember seeing both of those in the overflow box the night before and didnt think anything of it.

so as fast as i could i unplugged all the powercords, undid the siphon, and thought "crap". fast forward to 2:30. i had everything fixed up and clean and hoping nothing got ruined (the water overflowed onto 2 of the powerstrips). i thought it was odd cuase i heard a zzzzzzzzz similar to electricity arching so i moved the powerstrip away from anything flamible. i had to get some sleep so i crashed hoping for the best, fearing for the worst. at 6 when i got up i heard the arching noise a few more times and dreaded nothing bad would happen at school. already one of the timers was messed up from the water. my mom sent me a txt when she had lunch saying everything was fine and the light was on so i was happy. i got home at 4:45 and fixed some minor issues. instantly i noticed something was wack. when i stuck my hand in the tank, it was a combo or freaking hot and almsot getting electrocuted. i swapped the thermometer from the 75 onto the 55 and unplugged the heater. temp was 82.5 so it wasnt bad but still the shocking part bugged me. thats when i freaked out and thought "the water spilled onto the extension cord, the arching noise was stray voltage, and somehow stray voltage is getting in to the tank!"

it wasnt just the 55 that shocked me but both tanks so it had to be that powercord cause that was the only one that got wet and has cords from both tanks plugged in. instantly i unplugged the cord and ran to the comp.

so am i thinking the correct thing? is it stray voltage or am i missing something? anyone know where i can get a stray voltage reader that will read in saltwater? or a grounding probe? ive seen them online for like $20 but i dont wanna order one. any ideas? this week keeps getting worse and worse lol. also a chromis just died today and i lost a royal gramma that was ginormous and also the same with a lawnmower blenny this month. could this be the cause of the 3 deaths?

Is there something in the tank that could be providing electricity like a broke heater? If there is something shorting outside of the tank like the extension cord it cant get into the tank unless it is toushing the water somehow.

Just a thought.............how long was your return pump sucking air? I would check for damage.

i believe a multimeter with one end in teh saltwater and the other end on a good ground should give you a reading if there is stray voltage.

Find yourself a DVOM, stick it in the tank on the AC scale and measure across the tank and ground, that number should read as close to infinaty as posable. If your reading any voltage you have a short somewhere, start unpluging stuff until it goes down.

For a quick temporary fix i would grab a stainless bolt, and some copper wire, wrap the bolt with the copper, seal it up with silicone(dont want the copper in the tank) then take the other end of the copper wire and run it to the center screw on an outlet to the house. This will shunt any stray voltage right to earth ground. Check with the meter again, make sure your reading as close to infinaty.

P.s You can use any wire you have to shunt it to ground, does not have to be solid copper. Also, A grounding probe is cheap investment for you tank and your life!!!

mike- i dont know iw as trying to figure it out. alls i know is that its gone now but im still curious as to waht cuased the stray voltage.

L8ndeb- im not 100% on it but im fairly sure it wasnt too long, im not a super heavy sleep and woke up to the sucking air noise so i dont think it was long.

nissannx- multimeter?

deepseabeauti- DVOM? so your saying it should read "0" when you say "it should read as close to infinaty as possible"? thanks for the info im going to try to get a grounding probe asap.

A couple pieces of advice:

1. Always wear rubber soled shoes while working around the tank
2. Pluig all of your devices into a GFCI circuit.

Next, test your water like mentioned above using a multimeter (check through AC current first, and if you want, the DC)

Hope that helps

I'll second atomik. I'll add that I would chunk those powerstrips. I'd be more worried about a fire still using those tihngs than voltage in the tank.
