Bioballs work great when PROPERLY MAINTAINED
Prefilter incoming water with filter sock or bonded filter pad
Divide bioballs in three or four loose net bags and color code/ number/somehow identify bags for bi-annual rotation.
The bio balls grow bacteria and that is what the sump is supposed to do who cares if its live rock or bio balls. I had the sump with bio balls, skimmer, heaters together and a fuge in another tank. And yes I liked it. I up sized to a 55 gal tank for a sump now.
