its like they planned an attack!! i dont know if the snail is protected by its operculum or if they killed it.

Nope, your fault. Hermits outgrow the shells you need to provide bigger/empty shells for them to go into once they get bigger.

I did the same mistake with my electric blues killed around 5 of my astrea snails for there nice big shells:(

Wait make sure and check to see if your other clown isnt down there being eating by those hermits, could be trying to save it....

They could also be chowing down on some good left over food.

Hermits kill snails. It doesn't matter if you provide shells or not, that's what hermits do. Hermits are the devil. Snails are no match for them.

The snail *could* have died of natural causes and the hermits are just cleaning up. Yeah, right.

I don't know about the clowns... clowns are crazy anyway. It may just be being goofy -- my pair used to "buzz" the front of the gobies' den just to see them come out and puff up.

I assure you, the clowns do not feel bad for the snail. If anything, they might be hoping for some escargot themselves. While clowns won't hunt down and kill a snail (they don't have the right equipment), they are still opportunistic carnivores.

Or, the clowns are just annoyed that someone is in their territory. They can be very bold about moving things around to suit themselves -- including moving things they don't want OUT of their territory.

This is a long shot, but you may want to check around that rock for a small nest of eggs. If they started laying eggs, they will certainly defend their nest against the hermits quite vigorously... although not very effectively until they have a lot more practice.
