Stupid question regarding Canon TC80N3 remote

I must be doing something wrong...

I go to use my remote which I got a couple months ago and havent really used, I set it to a 50 second shutter speed and hit the scroll wheel on the left which starts the countdown. However, the camera does nothing.

What mode do I need to have the camera in, in order to use the remote?

I've tried "B" for the shutter speed, hoping that when it's in bulb it lets the remote take over, but it didnt work.

From the Nikon side. On my remote, there's a start button that starts the timer. If I use the camera's shutter release when the remote's connected, it doesn't work the remote one, but just uses the camera's settings. The remote can fuction on any camera "modes" but if a timed shutter speed is used, when shot from the remote, the remotes timer takes precidence.

And for some reason that isnt happening on my setup. I start the timer on the remote and watch it count down and when it's over, nothing happens.

I've tried a timer and I've tried a long shutter speed, neither seem to function with the camera. They both count down on the remote but nothing happens.

I know the remote is at least partially working as when I just hit the button that's basically just like the button the camera, the camera takes a picture. So the connection is getting through... I just think I must somehow need to put it in a different mode or maybe enable a function in the menus to allow remote control?

The last time I tried it I was using manual focus, trying to get long shutter speed shots of the stars, I'm 100% sure that time was manual focus, I cant say for sure on the other times but they were situations when the AF should have easily locked.

I forget the specifics. Manual focus helps, or it'll search. Did you set the # of frames you want it to take? If it is zero, it won't take anything.

Bingo, I bet that is it. Funny, I figured without setting anything it would just take one.

you asked for zero...you got zero :) this is very specific and complicated gear my friend :). There is also a way to set it to bracket too. It's been a while since I've messed with mine.

It depends what mode it's in.
The camera or the remote? I tried the remote on a couple different settings and never got a response from the camera.

I really bet it's because I was leaving it set at 0 exposures.

I read up on bracketing when I first got it, I think you basically set it for 3 exposures and then turn the camera to the bracketing mode.

it doesn;t have to be three. It can be 9, 12, 21, and mutiple of 3. I may be wrong but I do not think the camera setting makes a difference in the taking of a phot. I know I have used it with both manual and aperature priiority. Bulb may be a problem because there needs to be a second shutter press to close the shutter and allow the next image to be taken. Not sure if that can work (though now that I am thinking about it I think there might be. I don;t know how but I seem to remember reading about people setting up a camera for star trails and the timer to open in say an hour and stay open 2 hours. That my be just my burned out memory though and incorrect).
