Stupid question?

So i got a submersible hydrometer but where is the best place to read it to get accurate sg? Right now i have it in the main tank and the indicator bobs up and down a little. If I put it down in the sump where there isnt as much current I get a lower reading and there's no bobbing. Which is my true sg? Do they need flow to work properly?

i would say that it needs to be where there is close to no flow for it to work right, any every of hydrometer ive seen water doesnt move in the reading of the result.but i am still fairly new to the hobby so more suggestions/comments should be considered before making a decision.good luck

the best way to use those is to just fill them in the tank, then remove while full. making sure theres no bubbles on the arm. if im thinking right you have a Red Sea hydrometer right? the one with the temp. on it as well? if so you will need to put the black plug in the bottom or back where ever it goes.

Get some sort of large plastic cup around the house and fill it up and then put the hydrometer in there.
