Suggestions on Top Off System

I DIY a lot of stuff but decided that the one piece of equipment I was truly going to splurge for was an auto topoff unit. I bought a Tunze Osmolater. It's got alarms, backups and a run-dry proof pump (for when your reservoir runs dry because you forget to fill it up occasionally). It is also based on optics, so it maintains a completely level amount of water in your sump, rather than letting in drop an inch or so before refilling.

I've had it a year, never cleaned, never failed (in other words, idiot/lazy-proof).

Gravity fill system works well and is cheap. Mine is a 5 gallon bucket and a float valve. No need to worry about pumps! It is subject to the small cycling of water level in the sump as Tim mentioned however. Fill the bucket up once every 3-4 days. Salinty stays pretty constant (the change is barely detectable on my refractometer).

Also this system is independent of electrical problems since it uses no electricity unlike level detectors. The float valve is almost fail proof.
