Sump is WAY to loud

I bought two ehiem 1260's for my return flow, which is too much flow. So I just have one running and it is really loud were the water returns to the sump. I have pvc coming off the bulkheads to just below the water line in the sump, what else can I do?

another question if I turn the 1260's on and off once a day is this going to were them down?

This is how I completely silenced that very same problem:

Turning off the 1260's will not cause them any problem.

jag1979,

How are the Ehiems for noise? it was the water from the tank that caused the problem right? not the pump noise.

I use the same design but have the right side coming all the way out of the water.

I guess that the water dynamics of each and every reef configuration is unpredicable and different. I originally had mine coming out of the water on top like you say, raskal, because the original plan that someone posted here in RC had it that way, but it didn't work. I tried it out of desperation, and getting it below the water line worked like a charm.

I had a setup like that at one time with the top out of the water. Sometimes it would foam up pretty good. I thought about putting a collection cup on it LOL.

ok now that I have the water noise quited down, I notice the pump noise, not the ehiem but the sedra 9000 w/ the g4+ skimmer. What do yall put under the pump to silence the vibrations of the pump?

I tried a similar design of that posted, then I just put a 45 degree elbow on it and that worked better...easier too!

I say, whatever works. I don't believe that there's any way to figure out why one idea works in one tank and another works in another tank.

to quiet the mag drive in my sump I just put a couple of fat beads of aquarium silicone on the bottom and it worked great.
