sump pump question

I bought this hob overflow http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23781
with a mag 9.5 pump. I will be using them with a 20gal sump on a 75 gal tank.
It's roughly a 7' distance from tank to where sump will be.
I keep reading the mag 9.5 is WAY to much pump for a 75 gal tank, should I return it and get something smaller. I don't have anything set up yet.
ALL advise is helpful.
Very new and still learning. I thought you could just adjust things down and If I decided to upgrade I would be all set.

first off use the head loss calc on the main page - input your vertical head and horizontal and how many turns and such you think you will have - that will get you a pretty close idea of what gph the pump will put out on your setup-

you can throttle back a pump a little - im not sure the exact ammount but 20% should be safe just make sure you put the valve on the OUTLET never the inlet pipe

reply back when you have the head loss numbers so people can tell what your dealing with

i ran a mag 7 on my 75 but i had a built in overflow that could handle it easy- i also only had about 5' or vertical head loss

im also assuming on the link you supplied you got the 300 gph overflow?
 
the sump is going in the bottom of the left bookcase.
it is 5 ft from the center of the bookcase to the far right of the DT.
the tank to the top of the rim is 3 ft.
I guess I would be going over like 4'9" and up close to 3', don't know the best way to get there but that's where I'm looking at going......lol

Per the head loss calculator using .75" rigid PVC, 3 90 degree elbows and a ball/gate valve; your looking at approximately 576 gph of flow.

If you run a "T" off the return with another ball/gate valve you can redirect some of the flow into some reactors or back into the sump. Which would make this pump fine for your tank.

Something else to consider though, MAG pumps are great reliable pumps, but are known to be loud and can contribute a great deal of heat to your tank. My suggestion is to go ahead and keep the pump, but when it's affordable look into another pump for your return and use the 9.5 as a utility/back up pump. I suggest an Eheim 1262, nearly silent and lasts forever when maintained.
 
Thank You Reefmedic79. Is there someplace I can read or see explained, the plumbing.
such as the reason I would put a gate valve in or redirect water to a different part of the sump tank. Doesn't all the water go through the sump tank anyway ? I see different set ups with water being directed to the refugium section when its already going through there.
Just like to view all the options. I hear some say the use for water change.

All the water does go through the sump already, my suggestion was incase the pump was too much for the overflow you have installed. Basically you would redirect as if you had a refugium, but just direct it back to the sump. The gate valves would be used to fine tune the amount of flow your getting through each line.

I just seen other sump set ups with so much plumbing and different shut offs and such that I was just wondering what it was all about.
 
okay I returned the Mag 9.5 and ordered the Eheim 1260. It has 635 gph over 12' and my overflow box says 600 gph so I think I should be good. Now I just have to figure out how to make the sump tank. I bought a 20 gal high on the dollar a gallon sale at Petco and plan to cut the glass from an old hamster tank I have. Nice 1/4" glass and doesn't cost me nothing. Now I just need to know what size to cut the baffles and get this tank started. I ordered the Reef Octopus NB110 4" skimmer, so now I guess I'll look for some sump plans.
