sump redesign next on my list

So, I am rebuilding my 4 foot 120 which has been down for around 5 years. I had it running for over10 years prior to that.

I have almost finished building the stand, and I have my Bean drains mostly installed, both projects thanks to help in this forum.

The next thing I am looking at is my sump. I currently have a 30 gal. which is configured skimmer>empty compartment (I always said I was going to set up a fuge but never did)> Return. I need to rebuild it to correct a return section which is too small

I may use the 30 but I am looking for a 40B for some extra room.

My question is should I make a fuge or an ATO section built in? I MIGHT keep a mandy so pod area would be ok. Nutrient ex would be a side benefit but I have never really seen that as a significant benefit in a fuge this small. As for an ATO res. is this a pain to work out of?

Any design input is welcome!

Thanks for the continued help and input in my rebuild project!

I would use the 40 breeder for your sump. Include a large skimmer section that feeds through another open section for any reactors you may want to add, and lastly a larger return section. You could then use the separate 29 gallon as a refugium or ATO reservoir. This would be dependent upon the height of the inside of your stand. If its a 30 gallon tall then you probably want at least 35-40 inches of internal height for your stand so you can easily access the taller 29.
