Sump size

Is there a recommended size for sumps? Proportion to tank size? Or is it just make sure you have enough room for all of the necessary equipment? I'm looking into upgrading to a 240 long (96x24x24) and trying to figure out how big of a sump I'm gonna' need. I know I need enough room for a skimmer, 1-2 return pumps, heaters, and live rock, but is there anything else I need to make sure of with the size of the sump?

i would get as big of a sump u could under there
you will have more water volume, room for a fuge, plus no worries about having room incase u decide to upgrade equip. later

Im interested in how you will use 2 return pumps. How will you set them up, in series, parallel? There are benefits of doing it either way. Otherwise, I agree, get the largest sump you can fit in the stand, that way you will have many upgrade options and enough room for a killer fuge.

The solution to pollution is dilution.

Get the largest you can. Especiallyy with a 240. That's a lot a water changes. Hope you have a high capacity RO/DI and low electricity rates.

Pat

I just wasn't sure if there's a starting point like 25% of tank size or something like that. I'm using tap water for my 75 and not having any problems, and when I fired up the 75 it only kicked up the power bill by like 5 bucks!

Since the tanks I'm looking at have multiple overflows I was considering running a return pump to each overflow with flow switches running to either side of each overflow to help randomize the flow and help the powerheads with water turbulence.

You can do the same with a flow squid and have the pump go to both return's in the overflows and the water turbulence will be good. Run a littlegiant pumpand you wont have the big power bill.
