Sun Coral Culture

I was reading Anthony Calfo's "Coral Propagation" book recently and he talks about using raceways to increase flow over inverts (esp. clams) and corals as a way to help them get nutrients from the water. He also talks about using aiptasia for mechanical filtration of smaller particles. I was wondering if a low/unlit raceway would work for sun coral growth. it seems that if the corals were densely packed enough along the raceway, they could also act as a mechanical filter, as long as sufficient tank water passes though the raceway. Does anyone else agree, or is this crazy? I would like to build a small one and test it.
