so I got this new sun coral that the lfs said is healthy and here i am 4 days later and never seen an extended polyp.

I have "basted" the colony many times with cyclopeeze, mysis and brine shrimp.

any suggestions on how to open them up?

where do you have it placed. how much flow. have you looked at night to see if it is extending its polyps. I have one and he gets indirect light. is essentially under a ledge. In addition the flow is moderate. He opens in the day and at pm. I very rarely target feed. Give it time and it will open once acclimated

i have it on an outcropping. some direct and somee indiredct light. moderate flow. have not notice it open at night but, I'll look more now.

mine did not open for the first week I got them.
To get them going I put them in a bowl around the same time everynight. Put a cube of cyclopeze in there and let them sit for about 40mins..even though they dont really come out. gotta continue it everynight. it trains them to also come out when tehre is food. Mine open all the time now. it took about a week and half to get full extension from them. If i squirt a tiny bit of food in the tank now they will open up. After that processes I feed them about 3 times a week now.

Beautiful pic!....I feed mine in a bowl....that way I can inundate them with food and not foul the tank...if they haven't been fed regularly you will have to coax them into eating...the bowl idea works...but you will have to do it every day until they start eating..I put some phyto in the bowl and it gets them to open..them feed them...cyclopeze...brine soaked in selcon...mysis

I use the bowl method also. Phyto and some brine/krill mixture. Tubastrea is a "night" coral so you do have to train them. I feed mine every day (usually) because it is easier to remember and because if they are happy they may "bud" a new colony for you. May want to quiz your LFS about this just to check their knowledge for future purchases. HTH
