Sun coral question

I purchased a sun coral for my nano last week and it's doing great. I noticed that it starts opening every night when I feed. So I usually wait 15 min to let it open fully and then feed the last 1/2 of the food( brine and omni mix). Twice a week I actually puff food around it with a turkey baster. I've never seen it grab anything but the tentacles close up and it gets all puffy like a polyp for a few min. and then opens back up.

So my question is: Is this good enough or do I actually need to see it take the shrimp?

You probably want to observe it ingesting the shrimp. Do you never see the tentacles fully extended? Try using the cut bottle method.

If you blow the food/water directly to colony, the sun coral will retract the polyp. It is natural response. I usually turn off all the powerheads in the tank and blow the food over the colony very slowly. So the polyp can grab a hold of food.

+1 I find the best way to feed a sun coral is by letting the food to sit directly on each head undisturbed, that way you can keep track if it actually consumed the food.

Thank you! I turned everything off and I had a rock hanging over it (which was making it hard to feed) that I moved and just puffed the food above it and it looked like almost every head ate. It has alot of heads so it's hard to keep track. Thanks again!

If you feed like couple times a week, It will grow very fast. Remember this coral need to be fed. They are not photosynthesis type. Good luck with the coral.
