Hello All,
I have a sun coral that I purchase from LiveAquaria earlier this year. This is currently my only non-photosynthetic coral. It lives in an aquarium where I work so it makes it difficult to be there often enough to feed it as much as is probably should be fed. The other problem I am having is its placement in the tank. I have it sitting on a rock by itself on the sand bed so that it is easy for me to feed it. But I have a few fish that like to create "sandstorms" that cause sand to settle in between the tubes. I've tried moving the sun coral around but it doesn't seem to help. It still gets sand in between its tubes. I try to gently remove it as soon as I see it. There a few times when I wasn't able to get to it quick enough. The tissue between the tubes has turned black and I don't know if it can recover from this. I also have a problem with the coral getting pushed off the rock onto the sand.
My first question is: Can this sun coral recover?
My second pertains to setting up a sun coral only aquarium: I have an empty 5 gallon Marineland aquarium that had housed a small clown fish. The clown fish grew so I transferred him to another tank and emptied this tank. I was wondering if it would be possible to set this up as a sun coral tank so that I could set it up at home to make it easier to feed at night. I understand that a smaller tank requires additional attention to maintain proper water parameters and I'm prepared to continue the extra maintenance I had when the clown fish occupied the tank. The aquarium came with a small cartridge filter and bio-wheel. With the cartridge and bio-wheel and frequent water changes, would this be a suitable setup for one sun coral?
Any information you can give is greatly appreciated!!
