i am new to the hobby and just bought my first sun coral. the problem i have is that it won't open up so i can't feed it but i have been trying to feed it anyway and now i think it is starting to die due to malnutrition. how can i get my sun coral to eat?

Welcome to reefcentral!

What are you trying to feed it and what time during the day?

Suncorals are non-photosynthetic. Therefore, they don't naturally open up during the day, they open up really nicely at night (unless they were in poor conditions in the previous owners care=if they aren't healthy, they usually aren't able to open up again and require excellent care to bring them back)
But they should open up if you add something like cyclopeeze or phytoplankton or stuff like that. Only try to attempt to feed them when their tentacles are extended, feeding them when they're closed isn't going to do much.

Feed them mysid shrimp (frozen usually) or cyclopeeze, or live brine shrimp if you have the time.

If you have anymore questions just ask, and good luck!
and it might not be dying, a picture might help

Get a clear plastic container (I used a deli container) that is just slightly larger than your Sun Coral and place the coral in it and sink it to the bottom of your tank. If you have a sump, put the coral in its container in the sump for a few weeks. After lights out, pull it up and inject fine chopped meaty food into the container and give it time to respond. I did this for a couple of weeks until it began to open to feed. Once it opens to feed you can target feed each polyp. Another plus is that this prevents shrimp and fish from stealing food from the Sun. Mine was unable to close around the food for a while and this method worked to strengthen it. Now it's back in the Display and feeding well.

This is what I did with mine... like the person said above I used a tupperware with a rock glued on it and a hole cut to put in the food....

I use Rod's coral food, BBS, cyclopeeze, and mysis. I feed them everyday. Hope this helps!
