Surface Skimming

I am in the process of redesigning my filtering system on my 36 corner (not drilled). As it stands I have a BakPak2 skimmer running and a canister filter (mechanical filtration only). My question is is it worth a little extra expense and work to set up the filter inlet to "skim" the surface water to help with some of the film that develops, or is the benefit not worth the trouble.
