T5 on a 40 breeder

Should I go with a 24 inch long fixture or 36 inch

Depends on the fixture. Personally I'd go with a 6x24w ATI Sunpower. Hang it about 9" over the water and be set

I have the 6x24 and love it but I do kick myself for not getting the 8x24. I would have loved to have those 2 additional bulb slots for the extra $50

Cant imagine running 8 bulbs on my 40 breeder.... I run an 8 bulb on my 93 cube and have 200 par at the bottom of the tank lol

An 8 bulb unit is too wide for a 40B. You'd be wasting a ton of light

I have the 6x24w ATI dimmable about 8" off the surface of my 40b and its perfect IMO..
