Tang in a 55

Is there any tang that can be held in a 55??? I know I am asking for trouble but I had a yellow for 7 yrs in the tank, but he died in a recent move and I told myself not to buy one because of the size of my tank. But, I miss having a tang in my tank.

Any other rule breaking sucess stories???
Any Suggestions???

Depends on who you ask. Most people say minimum tank size for any tang is around 70 gallons. LiveAquaria recommends 50 or more, but keep in mind they're trying to sell them.

liveaquaria is wrong. They're a really good site for just references (like finding out which fish you like) and for actually ordering fish, but those tank sizes are wrong. IMO, the smaller tangs (like yellow tangs) should be in 70 at the very least.

Of course the fish will live..for a while. But its not gonna do well and will definatly have stress on it. Just look at the way they swim. They swim a lot back and forth...55 is just too short for them to swim back and forth.

What is the actual length of a 70 I know a 75 is still only 4'. Like I had mentioned before I had a yellow of seven yrs and I would still have him if he would have survived the 10 hrs in a bucket. So my only ?? is what do you gain with a few more inches front to back. Most tang swiming is left to right. if it is stability my tank has been a reef for almost 9 yrs.

Ummmm..... isn't a 55 and a 75 the same length? Yup. And same as a 90. I don't think it's overkill to go by the length of the tank in feet. Some tangs can be in 4' tanks, others need 6 or 8'. Something from the Ctenochaetus genus would be your best bet. Kole tang for example.

i would think u would be fine with a tank for a couple of years it just has to be a baby when you get it

Does any one have a suggestion for a mobile colorful fish that swims in the open and eats algae??? Maybe I'll get a small Powder Blue Tang---and then start working on the 120 for home.

I would say that a Yellow Tang or smaller such as a Kole Tang is okay in a 4' long tank. The wider the tank, the better, though. For example, a 75g is 6" wider than a 55g. But the are both 4' long. If you have the chance of getting the tang to a larger home, I would highly recommend it.

Scopas, yellow, tomini, kole....any of these, IMO, would be OK in a lightly stocked 55g.
