Tank Breakdown! 75G

A very tough decision but I am going to take a break after over 9 years. I have always had a super healthy strong tank with great growth and rarely lost a coral or fish. About 2 years ago things started to turn. I think I had a slow crash and phosphate build up. My husbandry has also been lacking since the arrival of my two sons (3 & 5).

I'd like to get the corals to a new home first as they seem in the most need. Within the last couple months, I lost some SPS and even LPS and have some die back on most pieces. Hopefully these can recover under the right conditions.

Text (415.2six4-ninety7eightysevn) or email (dougk76-at-gmail) for quickest response "“ I don't like messaging through RC.

My tank a few weeks ago;

Purple Torch "“ $50 - This is one of my oldest and favorite pieces. I have probably sold ~100 heads over the years. For the first time over the past year I started loosing heads. Still have ~20+ but they are receding. Take the pair of mated clowns with it for FREE.

Bi-Color Hammer "“ $25 - Smallish but growing strong. Has ~5 heads. This was part of a basketball size colony that died after a 65G tank crash last year (that is another story "“ not parameters but equipment failure).

From this colony "“ this was the 65 before crash;

Clovers "“ $10

GSP "“ $20/sq ft - about 4+ sq feet of it. The entire back of the tank is covered. Could be a cool project to aquascape a rock sculpture and cover it in GSP.

Purple Stylo "“ $25 - Poor PE and some die back but it is a good size and could recover. Top, left center of tank.

Elegance coral "“ $100 - Really nice hardy (very sticky). Probably has ~20 mouths. Could be small melon size if fully extended.

<a href="http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/doug_kiernan/media/IMG_20180623_135537.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg596/doug_kiernan/IMG_20180623_135537.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20180623_135537.jpg"/></a>

tyree original mummy eyes chalice - $50 "“ hurting but still has a bunch of eyes. Looks worse now than in this pic.

<a href="http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/doug_kiernan/media/IMG_20180623_135718.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg596/doug_kiernan/IMG_20180623_135718.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20180623_135718.jpg"/></a>

LPS (forgot name) - $75 "“ good size looks awesome when it opens up at night.

<a href="http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/doug_kiernan/media/IMG_20180623_135622.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg596/doug_kiernan/IMG_20180623_135622.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20180623_135622.jpg"/></a>

Zoas "“ a few large colonies.

<a href="http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/doug_kiernan/media/IMG_20161218_213835.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg596/doug_kiernan/IMG_20161218_213835.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20161218_213835.jpg"/></a>

Fish; My tank has had ich over the years. All of my fish have shown signs at one point but none have ever died from it.

Yellow Tang - $40 "“ ~5+" and health. First fish with pair of clowns ~9 years. Has a broken section of top fin, not sure if this was fin rot or something?

Mandarin Golby - $25 "“ medium ~2.5" I have had her for ~4 years (female short fin on top). Make sure you have a healthy population of pods to support her. If you have a male they dance when they pair up. Females are harder to find at the LFS. I had a male in my 65 and was going to put them together eventually :- /

<a href="http://s1245.photobucket.com/user/doug_kiernan/media/IMG_20180623_135651.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg596/doug_kiernan/IMG_20180623_135651.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_20180623_135651.jpg"/></a>

Pajama Cardinal - $20 "“ big health I have had for ~7 years.

Coral Beauty "“ $30 - I have had for ~2 years.

Some of the equipment;

Skimmer "“ SWC Cone 160
$125

29G Sump with 3 sections
$50

75G Acrylic tank "“ $100??
Critter Tank, 48x20x18 - External overflow with two ¾" drains. Nice full cover lids. Will include return plumbing. Scratched to ****. I don't know if this can be repaired. It may be destined to be a sump or non DT (unless it can be buffed out). I made the mistake of scraping with a metal scraper "“ It was sooo much easier, however not a good idea.

Return Pump "“ AquaMaxx VSG 6000
$100

Tank Stand & Canopy - Stained Black
$100

T-5's, 3 pairs, 48" retro kit with reflectors
$50/set

Tank, Stand, lights = $250 + return pump = $325 + Skimmer & Sump = $425

I am in Bernal Heights in San Francisco.

Pending;
Torch
Hammer
Elegance
LPS (Brain?)

Few people interested in Zoas... I'll post some better pics and prices.

I'm Back - Kinda

I'm Back - Kinda

Hello All - Thought I would post a quick update;

After selling everything off everything I was about to completely breakdown the tank. I pulled out all the rock and emptied all of the water then I got to the sand.

That stinky horrible sand. That was my problem. A problem that I would never be able to fix without emptying the tank and removing it. I rinsed it well over 10 times with a garden hose and it still stunk.

Over the last 10 years my sandbed became a sink that led to a slow crash. At least I identified the problem. Somewhat happy that I solved the problem of why I was loosing corals after all these years of having a very productive tank, I decided to fill it back up. I had a 30G full of live rock and sand.

Not sure what I was going to do next, somehow I came up with the idea of an octopus... I now have one but that is for another post.
