Tank cover

Hi,

I am wondering if it is necessary to keep your tank cover on or not? any benefits to keep it on or off? I took mine off for the first time in a few months and am not sure if I should just keep it off..this is not the canopy but the glass cover.

P.S. I did it in order to keep the temp under control.

you run an open MH? if so, then keep the glass on. If not, then take it off.

Might get more evaporation w/ it off tho...

Nope...I have 4x110 vho and 4x65PC. I have a 20g sump and about 40x turnover in water volumne. I am just trying to find out if their is anything negative to having the top on.

If you have jumpers. such as Wrasses then you need a cover...if not it's not necessary

Yes there are negatives with any glass or sealed top on a tank. The negatives are gas exchange will be poor, heat build up in the tank, more salt creep. By removing the glass tops or anything that seals the tank off, you will be aiding and promoting goood gas exchange, evaporation and a more stabile tank temperature.

I run an open top also...Its just easier for me....plus I run MH's...
Just keep an eye on things...Most all fish will jump if startled but some are more prone to jump then others...and its not fun to find a high dollar fish on the carpet looking like a dust bunny but that is one of the chances you have to take......Heck I have even had snails climb out of the water on rare occasions and take a trip around the top edge of the tank

If you have jumpers or want something on top of your tank, look at eggcrate. That's what I use. It's kind of the best of both worlds.

I think that if you leave it on you might safe guard yourself, from waking up in the morning and having a dead fish lieing on the floor.

I think that I can speak for almost everyone and say that the first time you wake up to a fish on the carpet you'll change your mind

I hate eggcrate, because of the glare you get off of it. However, I lost my favorite fish (my longnose hawk) to jumping and I'll never let it happen again.

Anyone know how high Mandarins and Clownfish are capable of jumping? We have a "euro-braced" tank (support around the sides). Thinking of putting an acryllic "wall" arount the inside edge of the brace instead of eggcrate over the tank (so more light will come in). Not sure how high I would need to make it. Water is almost to the top (maybe 3/4" below bracing).

if you got an open back canopy...this is all you need to do..better than having the eggcrate on top of the water...works great for me
btw..i run mh and vhos over open water - no glass - for the last 10 months
