I thought Heartbeat would be on by default but after reading about your heartbreaking crash, I checked my system. In going through multiple menus and help pages I found it was defaulted off, so I turned it on.

Since they heavily advertise it and pretty much everyone would want it on, it should be on by default, or at least be part of the initial setup walk-through! And while they are at it, it should be much easier to find in their menus.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, but at least your post is helping others.

Even if heartbeat was disabled, don't you check your tank like every 10 seconds and notice your apex is not responding?

I agree it should be ON by default. or at least during setup, it must let user acknowledge on a check box that user wants it off (for legal reasons so they don't get sued for it being off). This is standard practice for commercial software.

Anyway, I also just checked my setting and it was off. I just remembered I turned it off because it was annoying when I disconnected the apex for maintenance.

I like the old reeftronics method where they send you email up to 24 hours before it gives up. Then all you need to do is click on a link to re-enable.

Sorry for your loss. Remember that those things happen sometimes even for the most well prepared systems.
If you allow me, I would take this as an opportunity for a fresh restart... after all you already have all the equipment!
Do a good cleaning, get new sand, rearrange the rocks and off you go for a new tank.

A similar thing happened to me. Atlanta had an ice storm come through...lost power and heat in my apartment for 3 days. Killed all my corals and fish except for an eel and convict tang. I broke it down and only recently came back after a 10 year break.

My new tank has a decent sized UPS that runs only the heater and sump pump when the power goes out and I'm wondering if I should just go with the power head instead to give me more time.

OP, I know how hard it can be to get over that. I don't have any advice other than to learn from the challenges, change a few things....and plan on changing your tank to something new and different that can excite you and get your head back.

I thought that the Apex was configured that if you used the wall wart power supply plugged into the "brain" and the wall wart was plugged into a UPS, that it could be programmed to send an email when line voltage was lost to the power bar (eb8, eb832) indicating an outage ?

I know your disgusted at this point and that is fully understandable. Take some time away to get over the loss and then decide if you miss it. If up until the crash the tank provided you with enjoyment then get back at it. Use this as an opportunity to come back stronger and change the things that you've always told yourself you would do differently if you had to do it again.

It can, but most people opt to use the Heartbeat functionality since it doesn't require additional hardware. Also, keep in mind that the rest of your networking hardware would have to be on a UPS so it could send the alert.

I used to use ReefTronics before it was taken down due to the addition of Heartbeat.

Sorry about your tank. Just setting up my tank and reading this confirms my decision not to go with an Apex. I plan on getting a couple of battery backup air pumps for power outages.
