Tank crash...

Ok, tank crashed obviously.
Spent all day on the tank.

Second time I have had a problem and always after I moved a power head. First time I lost all but one fish, this time, I lost all fish, but no inverts.

Now, the odd part...
Ammo - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 30 High but not enough to kill fish typically. Plus amemone's, crabs, stars, snails are all fine.

The numbers were verified by a second test kit known to work.

What I did have was lots of macro algae.
From reading, I have heard that as it eats nitrates it can consume the oxygen in the tank. When I moved the powerhead, which was aimed at the surface, I guess I decreased the oxygen enough to cause a problem.

Am I correct in assuming this was the case?

As it is, I did a 95% water change (after putting what was alive in Q/T, luckily I listened to that advice there and got one), scrubbed my rock, dosed with Amquel+, and removed a lot of the macro I think was possibly masking a nitrate issue.

I really do not want to lose fish like this again, I lost some nice specimens. Still not sure if the coral will make it, but luckily I do not have much.

Yeah, a messy eater.

Problem is that last time I had only added a small tang to a tank with 2 small damsels.

I do tend to overfeed, but I was watching the numbers.
