Tank Depot rant w/ advice

OK, first the rant...

I was planning on ditching the whole driving to the LFS to fill up jugs thing in favor of buying a 300gal storage tank and getting SW delivered.

So I check out tank depot's website.
A 300gal vertical tank is listed at $188.
Great! After 2 fillups the tank will have paid for itself!
It states on the website that this model ships out of Florida so I know this particular tank is available locally.

I'm about to drive over to Pompano to buy it, but first I give them a call just to make sure it's not out of stock.
The salesman answers the phone and tells me it's in stock.
Great! I'm on my way!
Then he tells me the price is $365!!!
Whoa! What!?!?
WTH do you mean it's $365???
It says right on the website it's $188.

Oh, that's just the online price.
You have to pay shipping on that so it's going to be more.
But wait a minute, I want to pick it up myself.
No need to ship it, right?
Oh no he says.
You see, these tanks had to be shipped from California so it already cost us the shipping which we have to charge you.
But it says on the website that if I buy it for $188 it ships out of Florida?
The guy doesn't budge and doesn't give me any other answer which could be mistaken for logic of any kind.
Fine. Screw that. Good day.

So I check the website again.
Yep, $188.
Yep, ships from Florida.
Yep, there's a shipping charge... $135 to a residential address.
Wait a minute... that only adds up to $323...?
Now I'm really confused.
What's the profit margin on this thing and why don't these guys realise they could make more profit by cutting me a deal and having me pick it up on my own dime?
It's still friggin cheaper for me to get it shipped by a big deisel-guzzling truck than to save them the expense and pick it up myself???

OK, so now I decide to check the last choice and see what shipping is to a commercial address... it's $90.
So the absolute cheapest option is to order an item that is sitting over in Pompano, which would cost me $365 plus tax to pick up myself, have it put on a truck and spend an extra $90 for it to be driven 6 miles to my work, where I will still have to load it into my truck and drive it home.
Is it just me, or is there something seriously wrong with this whole picture?

Yes, I'm still going to get it, and of course I'm ordering it online and paying shipping, but I'm sure as hell not happy about having to spend the extra $90 that I could be spending at the frag swap because tweedledumber depot won't let me pick it up myself... and will probably make me wait 2 weeks to get something that I could drive by and see thru the fence tomorrow.

Moral of the story is, if you're planning to buy a water tank from tank depot, order it online and have it shipped to a commercial address to avoid being streched over a barrel and %#@&!. :eek2:

You have your own business now so you need to bypass the middle man, pay much less and receive direct answers from the wholesalers/companies.

Or maybe you are already doing that...

The aquaculture biz isn't off the ground yet and I'm still working on all the paperwork, but even so, I don't think I'm going to be able to find a better price than that one online.
I only need one tank, and I doubt there would be enough people interested, or who have enough space for a storage tank to make a groupbuy possible.
Now if I had an operation like Treeman's.... hmmmm, I wonder where he orders from? Why didn't I think of that before?
Thanks Matthew.

Really I find this hard to believe. I think its worth a trip over there cash in hand...Bring a print out of course.

I found it hard to swallow myself... hense the rant.

To tell the truth I think that Matthew is probably close to the truth in that the online entity is the "wholesale" distributor, and the local store is the "retail" distributor.
I noticed there was a line on the parent website about inquiring to open your own retail store.

Still, it certainly couldn't hurt to print out the webpage and go talk to the manager of the local store with cash in hand.
Even if I just got it for a few dollars less than the $278 shipped price it would be worth it and I could start using it right away.

I just wasn't counting on spending the extra money and with buying all the equipment, lights, tanks, racks, etc. to start the aquaculture thing, every dime counts.

Yeah I had to deal with this same exact situation from Tank-Depot.

Though I was looking for a 100gal storage container and not a 300gal I saw the online price on thier website as $100 for a 105gal 65" tall container. Called them up just like you did and they had it in stock. I work in the area so the drive wasn't bad. When I got there I asked them for this container and once onsite it's now $200.00!!! I was like WHAT WHAT WHAT!!!!

I was able to talk them down to $170 and just paid it and went home. I was PO'ed but with my container strapped down in the rear of my truck.

You can call the Better Buisness Bureau and file a complaint for false advertising. That will get their attention, or if you pay for it with American Express call the card company and tell them about the switch and email them a copy of the advertized price and they will stand behind you 99% of the time, and only send the retailer the lower amount and bill you accordingly.
