I've been out of the hobby for a few years now, but it looks like I'm about to be thrust back into it.
The background
There's a long story behind this, but the short story is that after months of asking my boss to set up a reef tank in the office, an opportunity arose and he bought a used 75g tank setup from a co-worker's neighbor (possibly one of you guys
).
The tank
It's a 75g reef ready Marineland tank, with a few scratches (inside of the glass) and a missing weir for the overflow (I guess I can find a replacement part?). I haven't seen the stand yet, but it doesn't have a canopy - just a Coralife T5 dual lamp fixture. There is a sump and skimmer (eshopps psk-100), and the skimmer section of the sump will probably not fit anything larger than that.
The team
While we may consider hiring out the maintenance of the tank at some point, there are three of us with reef tank backgrounds who have volunteered to setup and maintain the tank.
The dilemma
This would be a great tank if we were running a pizzeria, since this is going into the office of a multi billion dollar company I'm not sure this tank looks the part. At the very least, we're thinking we would need a higher stand and a canopy (to keep people's meddling hands out of the tank and also hide lighting, an automatic feeder and plumbing). There is a benefit of going with a smaller tank (75g - 120g) to make it a bit easier to maintain and move if we needed to, but I don't think starting with a tank that needs repairs is the smartest way to go. Good news is that my boss is open to buying a new tank, but wants to keep the total cost of the tank down.
The LFS advice
We went to one LFS today and were told that the only manufacturer that sells canopies, stand, tank combos is Deep Sea Aquatics.
The ask
I've been keeping up with the hobby enough to know what equipment would be best, but I don't really know anything about choosing a tank for an office environment. Anyone have any advice on which direction to go from here?
Thanks!
