I just bought a 40 gallon breeded tank that has 1 hole drilled in the center bottom.I have never done a rr tank so I'm a little confused to what I would need or where to begin I have searched all over the net but I have not found anything that helps.I have also just thought about sealing the hole and using my canister filter.Would love some input from the more experienced people here. Thanks

Wow I can not believe none of you guys want to give her any help on this. If she was a HE you would be all over it with I will do it for you.

Has nothing to do with the fact mickela is a girl. Im shocked you would bring gender into it. I didnt answer because I simply dont know what to tell her. I cant make up her mind on what way to go with a 40g tank. Depends on what she wants to do with it.
I also didnt hear you speak up and give any help. How many tanks you have? 7 ?

Sorry Mikela, Figure out what you want to do with it then go from there.

 a responce I am shocked. Any advice as to setting up a RR tank drilling a nother hole for her and doing the plumbing to the sump would be greatly appreciated. I bring gender into it as if a guy asked the same question I know there would have been 10 replys or pm's by now. Thanks for your reply and offer that is a step in the right direction now she will contact you to pick your brain.

It wouldnt have answered the thread even if it was a guy. I have no expeirence making a 40 gallon tank RR. No idea what size plumping or what size pump to use. Never made 1 so small. Everyone was waiting for someone who did it to a 40g to answer. I know thats what I was thinking when I read it. Its not a common size for someone to make RR.

But ill do my best.

Hi Mickela! Well I think you have stumped the guys here!! Having a tank drilled in the center bottom is a rather odd configuration. So I will go out on a limb and offer some advice. The only tank I have ever encountered that was drilled on the center bottom was a very large custom built tank owned by Gary M. The way he set it up was to have a PVC pipe that went from the center bottom hole right up to about the bottom of the plastic rim on the tank. The then stacked rocks all around the PVC pipe to conceal it and had it viewable on all four sides!!! The tank is now owned by larrybird and he is not using the holes in the bottom any longer. The way to fill up the holes IMO is to buy a bulkhead that fits the hole drilled and buy a pvc plug to seal it up. If you wanted to use the hole you would still need the bulkhead but you would buy a PVC connector that would screw into the bulkhead and have a female connection on the otherside for the PVC "standpipe". Make sure the pipe is 25-50% bigger than the bulkhead itself. For example if you have a 3/4" bulkhead you would want your standpipe to be 1" or if it is a 1" bulkhead then go with a 1.25" standpipe. Cut the standpipe to length and cement it into the connector. Either a slip or threaded bulkhead should work and your PVC connector should be bought to match the bulkhead you buy. You will need a way to keep snails out of the stand pipe and this is a very important part you don't want to forget!!!! For my stand pipes I use a mesh stretchy thing you can get at a spa/pool store. It fits right on the pipe and keeps fish, crabs, and snails out. It is easy to remove and clean but don't forget to or your tank will overflow. I hope this info helps you get started. This is a semi challenging DIY project but shouldn't be too bad. I am sure you can do it if you have the time.

Oh and one other drawback to standpipes is they are not the most quite options for RR tanks. If you are not using too much flow putting a 45 degree angle on top of the standpipe may help or you may have to make a durso standpipe. The problem with the durso is it may be a bit unsightly right in the middle of a small tank. Here are the instructions on how to build one...

If it was me I would just plug the hole and use the canister filter but it is up to you. I think the reason you are not getting responses is because either people don't know what to do, they didn't want to break you the bad news that a hole in the bottom is a difficult configuration to work with, or they are just too lazy to type up a big long response to your question :)

Post here if you have any other questions and I will try to check back periodically

PS Girls rule (the boys around here are just a little shy, don't hold it against them) :D

Ok let me explain a little better before I head to work. It's early so bear with me.The drilled hole is in the center buit on one end.It has pvc (3/4") and it does come almost to the rim of the tank.I talked with Gary (thank you Gary you helped a lot) and he gave me some places to read.I believe the tank was drilled this way as it was used in a pet store and maybe they tied them all together this way.I'm thinking the best way to do this is going to be to pulg the hole and use a overflow.Noisey we dont want ,the hubby isn't real big on the tanks as is so quiet is good.He is getting better just takes some sweet talking. He threatens to move me to the ocean all the time.

you can make the overflow box on that end by siliconing in a single piece of glass the width of the tank... and drill a second hole for a return:

The I's would be the overflow baffle (looked much better before posted, but you get the picture)

Wow...first of all I didn't even know mikela was a woman (I don't know lots of things I guess :) )...just like I didn't know razzmatazz was a woman until a little while ago.

Anyway...mikela, I am not sure if this helps, but I happened to be checking this site out the other day (I was going to have them design and build me a 10,000 gallon reef that I could swim in - j/k) and saw all different types of overflows. You could do a center overflow, although I am not exactly sure how you could do it. Here is an example (I guess you would just build a square out of acrylic and set it down over the hole, do your durso standpipe and all that good stuff, I think it could be really cool)...

Here are a couple more links in the site for more info...

Mickela, I am confused. I was under the impression that the tank was drilled on the bottom. Meaning that the bottom plane of glass was drilled in the center. Now I am getting the impression that it is the back plane of glass is drilled? Towards the bottom center of the back plane? A picture would really help :)

Nate you are right it is drilled on the bottem of the the tank not the side. I will try to get her to take a picture when she gets home from work.

I think this could be a really cool tank (build). A center overflow has me intrigued...I think the idea is to be able to set a tank like this in the center of a room and be able to walk around it.

exactly, this could be a very cool tank! If you want it to be quite you could build the durso and conceal it with a square glass overflow in the center of the tank! Try to get some black glass and it will look really slick. Here is more or less what I have in mind except square...

If you are not going to have it viewable on all four sides I would just plug the hole and cover it with sand. You will save yourself a bunch of work...

well more creativity than this bimbow can handle. I hope she just plugs the hole and say's ********** on it but I like the idea I may try it on one of my tanks laying around to practise. I do not want to mess up someone elses tank.:spin2: She likes things to look GREAT I do not give a hoot as long as it works.
