Tank is sick!!! What next??

Remember to take everyone's advice then do your own research and make educated decisions based on what you have learned. There are some pretty stead fast rules, there are a lot of general rules and there is even more that is theory and unknown in this hobby. Sometimes the most frustrating part of this hobby is that when you go looking for answers they just aren't there. Most of the information about anything in this hobby is gained from other people in the hobby and you have to weed through everyone's opinions until you find people you can trust or better yet documented information(which is rare).
Ask away and let everyone help but remember to do your research.

I guess I am going to jail. I kept a yellow tang in a 20long tank for 2 years before I sold it.:uhoh2:

Tell that to your lfs.
OK, and if they tell me it's OK to keep a tang in a 30 display tank, I'll find a different store. After all, that's what we're talking about is a display tank (or did you not bother to read the entire thread?)

And with a statement of such you either have a 150 or so for qt or you don't qt.

Or, if you had bothered to read my sig, you'd see that I only have a 27 gallon tank and so don't keep tangs so your strawman flames out and falls over in a pile of ash.

Either way its wrong to give said advise. Now long term is a total different subject, that's still out for debate :deadhorse1:

Here's a white tail I kept in a 30 for qt or was that wrong?

Maybe you should try reading and understanding where the advice came from? He had 5 or 6 fish and a nem all added to a brand new 30 gallon display tank. That tank is too small for a tang - sure you can put one in and it will survive (when properly introduced) but you can also keep your dog in a 2x2 crate its entire life and it will survive but it's quality of life will be crap. Quarantine tanks were never mentioned and are not part of the discussion so either you don't understand that or your just arguing for the sake of arguing.

Is that what SLASH is about?

Stupid me, I tried helping someone out and giving some advice. Stupider me, I spent 25 bucks on a SLASH membership. Why don't we fix both? You can transfer my membership to Breto and give him my 5 CDP points so he can put some corals in his tank while he's waiting for fish and get advice on the SLASH board.

A crappy attitude and a condescending tone is not how to help anyone do anything......unless your intent is to help someone see the type of ____ you are.

9 months to a year for a nem? That's ridiculous!!! You want to use that advise for yourself or recommend it in a proper manner...... fine, but don't speak as though it's gospel.

As far as I can tell, transferring your membership sounds like a fabulous idea....

Update:

Last night I re-tested Ammonia and it came out to 0.

The 6 Line has re-developed ick so as suggested I lowered the temp back down. I going to continue to medicate with their food.

I do appreciate all the advise and I apologize for starting some big Tang debate. To put the Yellow Tang in the 30 gal tank was my choice and mine alone, I'm not going to throw my LFS under the bus, I bought a relatively small one with the intent to either trade him later on in his life or possibly upgrade in tank size.

I will try to keep everyone up to date as to what happens next.

Is the medication invert safe? You don't want to hurt that nem.

One thing is certain here: ammonia is harmful to all remaining livestock. If your tank was cycled, I would suggest large daily water changes-50% daily- until ammonia is zero.

A simple lifesaver for new tanks is a stick on ammonia alert. You can see with just a glance what's happening. To simplify, 6-1 test strips will help you quickly see if your ph is in range. It seems you know your salinity. These are key parameters that need to be checked and kept stable along with temp.

Don't worry about the tang police, they come out every now and then. I kept a hippo tang, yellow tang and a flame angle in a 24 gallon nano (with others). Anyone who will blanket say that cannot/should not be done needs to take their own advice and slow down. There just isn't enough information here to say anything. Both of the tangs in my 24 were MAYBE 2" long. The angle wasn't much bigger.

As for a LFS that wouldn't sell you a tang can for your 30 gallon; Unless there is a new store I am unfamiliar with all stores around here will happily take your money and thank you for your purchase.

Additionally to all of this, I have not seen if the water was treated with anything. There are multiple ways you can add a large bio-load of fish to a system with water treatments, additives and whatnot.

What I tell everyone I talk to looking for advice with saltwater is that it is just that with a few exceptions. Anyone who tells you they know something is DEFINITELY this and only this is just lying to you and you have to question anything else they say aside from those exceptions. Always and never are very strong words in this hobby and shouldn't be tossed around lightly.

I definitely know that there is a lot more about this hobby that I don't know than I do know and I will never learn it all. That is not a lie. :p:lol:

Keep testing your water and keep track of all your parameters. Keep a little note book or something so that you look back and see how you are doing. Let us know how its going. With pics. We love pics.

Like I said you can keep a tang in a 30, properly planed which is what he had in place. The video I posted looks nothing like a qt system does it :)

LFS in this area do buy back fish, and that's a awesome bonus buying at LFS IMO. If a fish was to out grow my system and I cant find someone with a bigger system to pass it on to, well its going back to the LFS. Ive had only one tang I had to return to a LFS in my years in this hobby, and that was a sohal from my old 225.

Ebius summed it up for me :D

Ill buy you a beer at the next pizza night
