Hi, I am starting a project and would like your input. We (my class) will be building a tank(s) to hold Pismo Clams. My concern is choosing the optimum size tank. The space we have will hold a tank(s) 32x2x34. I would like to make a large tank but am concerned about a single tank being susceptible to a large die-off if a problem occurs. Smaller tanks would be more susceptible to temp changes. I'd appreciate any input on this. Thanks

Why not? Pismo clans are nps filter feeders. They will bury themselves under sand with only the siphon showing. I would think a 24" tall tank will allow a fairly deep sand bed for them to bury.

Those dimensions don't compute with me. The only thing that would make sense is if you meant 32"x24"x34". Can you tell us again what the dimensions are either all in feet or inches?
I would go with a single large tank over a couple of smaller ones. Yes the single large tank does present a crash that would kill all the clams, but the bigger tank offers more stability and would be less likely to crash in the first place. The pumps and equipment would also be less expensive for a single tank rather than multiples. I would go with at least a 8" deep sand bed, so I think the 24" tall tank makes sense. There really isn't a standard sized tank that meets your needs, although 30" x 30" x 24" tall custom tanks do show up on occasion.
