Tank Transfer Guys - Quick Questions

Hey guys,

Going to get a batch of Anthias and a wrasse or two Tuesday and would like to do the tank transfer method as the first stage of QT.

I've read the sticky, but was wondering if anybody changed anything, found something that worked better for them...

I have a few quick questions if you don't mind :)

1. How long do you do the treatment? 12 days?

2. When do you switch tanks? Beginning of the 3rd day?

3. What do you use to clean off the tank and equipment after emptying it out? How long do you let everything dry?

4. What do you put in the tank? I was thinking heater, powerhead and pvc. Any need for any type of filter, hob/sponge...?

5. Do you not worry about water from the net getting from tank one to tank two?

6. What about any water / residue if I move the cover (eggcrate) from one tank to the other once I've moved the fish over? Any chance some splash could contain ich?

Any other tips?

Sorry guys... just want to make sure I'm doing this right

To reiterate . . .

I have a few quick questions if you don't mind :)

1. How long do you do the treatment? 12 days?

12 days total, no longer than 72 hours per transfer cycle

2. When do you switch tanks? Beginning of the 3rd day?

See answer above. Less than 72 hours is fine per cycle, total of 12 days

3. What do you use to clean off the tank and equipment after emptying it out? How long do you let everything dry?

4. What do you put in the tank? I was thinking heater, powerhead and pvc. Any need for any type of filter, hob/sponge...?

vinegar water but air dry until totally dry. No filtration required. I add an ammonia remover on day 2.

5. Do you not worry about water from the net getting from tank one to tank two? I use a colander not a net (ideally a squared edge one)

6. What about any water / residue if I move the cover (eggcrate) from one tank to the other once I've moved the fish over? Any chance some splash could contain ich? Use different equipment; do not share.

Any other tips? very easy, do not make more complex than necessary

Sorry guys... just want to make sure I'm doing this right

Thanks Steve :)

Have some prime and amquel laying around since I was running hypo in the display.

Sounds pretty simple, thanks!

It is pretty simple. I use Prime on day 2 but any ammonia neutralizer is fine.

Do you feel a large Lineatus Wrasse and 5 Anthias will be OK in 20 gallon longs for TTM?

Then will move to a 40 gallon breeder...

here is what i understand:

Lets say I start the process on Sunday night, the next TT is on Wednesday AM before i go to work. i say AM because according to the experts the ich tends to detach themselves from the host and this is the best time of day to remove the fish to another tank.

snorvich is this correct? :)

72 hours or less and you are golden.

it all depends how much you feed them and how big the fishes are. if you think the 20 gal is too much bioload then do a water change every 48 or 24 hours to keep the toxins under control.

Another question...

Would it be alright to use tap water with prime for tank transfer?

Then use RODI for the larger QT holding tank?

I would not. I never like to introduce unnecessary variables. :uhoh2:

Yeah no reason to be lazy :)

So if the fish go in tomorrow morning, I should follow this schedule:

Tank 1: Wednesday AM - Saturday AM
Tank 2: Saturday AM - Tuesday AM
Tank 1: Tuesday AM - Friday AM
Tank 2: Friday AM - Monday AM
Large QT: Monday AM +

Does the container used to catch the fish and water it contains contaminate the next tank? Or would the parasite be on the tank bottom at those times?

Hey guys, got everything setup last night and got my fish this morning.

Here they are hanging out in "Tank 1". Ended up using one powerhead, heater, PVC and small HOB skimmer to aerate water.

Large Common Cleaner Wrasse (Had luck with our other Common Cleaner):

Guess Saturday 30 min to an hour earlier than today I'll move them to the second tank :)

Thanks for all your help!

Tank water is a little bit murky, anything to worry about?

No ammonia or anything alarming...

It will most likely be murky with that many fish in a small QT.
Limit your feeding and use Prime. Make sure you siphon off all but enough water for them to swim. IMO/E it is a lot easier to do one maybe two fish at a time. Your risk of transporting ich increases with more activity when moving the fish. IMO. Hope it goes well.

Not really seeing much ammonia.

I used a little prime yesterday and it STUNK!

Would using some liquid nitrifying bacteria be an OK substitute for Prime?

I added a piece of filter floss to the HOB skimmer's return and the water looked clearer overnight.

BTW: When I clean the tank and equipment tomorrow, what's the best method?

Should I fill the tank up and put all equipment in with tap water. Then add some bleach (how much? - 20 gallon long).

Then rinse well with tap water again and fill it up with water and add vinegar (how much?).

Then just clean out one more time well with tap water and let air dry outside?
