tank transfer method

So when I use ttm, am I mixing new saltwater for every transfer? Is there any filtration I need to run in the tanks?

yes new salt water. no filtration needed. heater and powerhead or power filter to aerate the water. don't need to run the carbon or any medias. water shouldn't build up too much ammonia but keep an eye on it.

I usually try to make large batches of saltwater at a time, about 40g or so. Then my transfer water will always be the same basically. Less stress on the fish. Plus it's just easier for me.

I do put a little poly pillow stuffing in my power filter and change it every night but it's not a necessity.

i just use air pumps/stones for TTM. as said above, no need to do significant filtering.

if you aren't running your DT fallow (e.g. waiting for Ich to die out in the DT), then you can use DT water (this is what I do). And then I add new mixed water to my DT... so acts as a water change at the same time... quite efficient.

have a sponge filter seeding in your DT (again, if you aren't going fallow), and then you can use that as your biofilter for your post-TTM isolation period.

I do plan to go fallow. Couple more questions. I have a ruby red dragonet that does not eat fish food at all. How do I keep him alive while keeping my display fallow? I've read that they are/can be resistant to ich, so do I leave him in the dt tank?

No, use disposable air stones. Yes, air pump can be the same assuming it's external, use new air-tubing towards the new air stone though.
Clean EVERYTHING with white vinegar, rinse with fresh water (tap is fine), pat dry and then let air dry for a minimum of 24 hours.

You'll have to buy pods to feed your Mandarin. It might eat prepared foods as well but that won't keep him alive. You cannot have ANY FISH in a fallow tank to eradicate Ich. Don't be fooled. Mandarins can get Ich they just usually don't.

I do have a separate pod tank that I use to restock my dt periodically. I just worry the other fish would get the pods before the dragonet since there will be no rock for the pods to hide in.

i just drop them in. never had an issue. really wouldnt have been any reason for alkalinity to decrease in <3 days. make sure to keep salinity the same each time.

do you use a regular net to go from tank to tank or something different? going to be getting some clowns later today or tomorrow, and im all set for the TTM. just want to know if there is a less stressful way then a net without transffering any water.

A colander or similar works well.
I just use some cheap Rubbermaid containers, drilled holes in one to drain water out and took a flame to the holes to remove any rough edges. Then catch with that and place inside second container so fish remain in water as I move from one to the other tank. The as I lift the container with holes out, water drains our and release fish into other tank.

unless they have spines, i just use a vinyl glove and hand transfer them. but for Tang's and the like, i do what DDon said. there are some good ones at Walmart that have a 3-pack of different sizes. Green in color. In one of the TTM links someone posts a picture, if you can find it.

I just used the TTM on a clown pair with 10g tanks.
