TBSW live rock

I was going to purchase from TBSW for a new nano I am setting up but am concluding from the posts that if you want the nice organic growth on their rock you have to put up with the unwanted hitchhikers.

For me that is more trouble than it is worth (though I van see whay others would want the rock).

Am I just reading a few bad experiences or is this pretty much the norm with this rock?

The amount of (if any) pest hitchhikers you get is a matter of chance and can vary depending on the specific shapes you receive as well as the amount in weight. I have received 3 seperate shipments of TBS rock in the past several months and got 2 mantis shrimps in the first shipment and none in the following 2 shipments. I also received a handfull of crabs which I have since caught and removed.

I believe many of these bad hitchhiker threads are overstated and not as bad as some people make out, and certainly not a valid reason to avoid buying TBS rock in my opinion. Many of the bad guys can be removed from the rocks upon arrival, and the rest that may or may not turn up can subsequently be captured and removed.

The grim alternative is buying live rock from overseas which has virtually no life whatsoever other than some dead rotting plant material and a few patches of coralline algae that survived the scrubbings and curings and wrapped in newspaper for days on end and sitting in airports and warehouses and everything else. And the stuff at the local fish stores in my experience is even worse, and usually looks like rocks I would find laying in my back yard.

Hey all. I got rock from TBSW for my nano about 3 months ago. Enjoying, however I do have a mantis that remains (i'm loathing re-scaping to get at him). Up until this point, he really hasn't done any damage to the cuc. Just been eating the barnacles and a few clams.

My question now is how safe would a fish be (thinking about a royal gramma) in there with him?? Any opinions/experience on this??

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't get a few bad hitchhikers. I'd say that it's the norm, though I'm sure someone will chime in and claim their shipment was clean of such things.

What IS occasionally overblown in my opinion, is the (a) difficulty of removing the pests, and (b) the damage caused by them. I had 3 mantis shrimp, and both were captured with little effort. I had countless gorilla crabs, and while they were a wiley bunch, they were all captured within a few weeks. If I can do it, anyone can.

Obviously if you want completely trouble-free rock, get some fully cured rock from your LFS or somewhere. But I'd suggest that you not simply dismiss TBS because of the possibility of hitchhikers. It's more manageable that many people make it out to be.

One reason I chose TBS rather than LR sold in the LFS is that TBS LR is aquacultured--meaning no reef depletion. If you decide against TBS LR, at least consider some other aquaculturer or DIY aragrocrete rocks.

The other reason I purchased TBS LR is because it was worth every penny. I have no regrets.
