Hey everyone,
i find myself wandering over to these parts and am just drawn into breeding fish. I think what you guys are doing is really great, and i can only imagine how much fun it is. I have read a couple of threads on raising clownfish and a couple on raising cardinals. What i get out of it is Cardinals are 100% easier to raise with better survival rates. I do have two clowns, although they havent spawned yet, i would eventually like to try and rear the fry. I figured i would like to try on something easier first. I have a couple of questions though.
1) - from my understanding is that captive breed are easier to acclimate and will do better in the home aquarium, where do you get them from, and how do you get a pair (male & female). If i brought lets say 4, what are my chances of gettin at least one female? and will the males eventually kill each other?
2) - whats the minimum tank size? my 50 gallon is packed now, so it will have to wait until i upgrade or i was thinking of starting a 40 gallon prop tank once i get a house, hopefully within the next year. I figured why not try and breed bangais as well.
3) - from what i read, maturity is reached between 6 months and a little over a year, then how often do they breed? how many offsping? and how long do you hold onto them until you trade/sell to LFS and other members? how much for? Im not in it for the money, more for the joy, but i would like to offset some costs, and promote captive breed fish and corals.
4) - what is the general process, to rear these fry. from what i read, it was pretty much the male carried the eggs and eventually fry in his mouth, then you feed BBS, but then i read about egg tumblers and other things, im just confused.
like i said, it will probably be some time, but i would like to prepare, and pick up some equipment every now and then. Then eventually get the fish.
thanks everyone,
Jeff
