Jason,

I watched alot of posts in your threads and you seem to be in the know. What grade would you call my pair of onyx or are they true onyx?

Well first off let me say they are gorgeous fish. You are going to have some very attractive offspring! That being said, I'd have to say those are not Onyx that come from the C-Quest line.

Here is a recent video of my female Onyx. You'll note that the black coloration doesn't blend into the orange. It's either black or orange. Your fish have a blended look on the fins and the face. I see that a lot in hybrids like sanjay's photons or other onyx/xxx mixes.

Again, beautiful fish. But I have a feeling they might even have a little occellaris in them. Onyx are True Percs.

So is there any type of name for what they are or is there nothing really special about them and you won’t hurt my feeling? I have no intentions on making a business out of raising clowns. As a home hobbyist I just want to see if I get raise a few more so that I can say I did it. That spawn was their 4th and they are guarding the 5th (huge clutch) which will hatch this Saturday.

I know exactly what you are talking about with the copper/bronzes eyes the day of the hatch and that’s how I can tell too. I have tried 2 spawns but can’t get them passed day 3. I think it may be lighting issues. Still trying to work out the bugs I guess and have 2 buckets or rots rolling as I speak. I have had plenty of rots the other times I tried to it must be something else. I using a 5 gallon tank with about 3 gallons of water in it from the main tank they are spawn in. I pull the water the night of the hatch and set it up let the air and heater run until it matches the DT. Move the eggs under water and let and stone create flow but bubbles don’t touch the eggs. I get a 100% hatch but can’t get them past day 3.

Beautiful Onyx too. I have a pair of true perc's that same color yellow.

Ah, good times. This post totally reminds me of my first 10 attempts! lol

My break-through was when I developed my slow-drip system. Does your DT hosting your broodstock have a sump? If so, you might want to try my slow-drip approach. Check out this video I made:

This was the single biggest difference for me. I went from total failure to total success as soon as I adopted this system.

3 day deaths could also point to starvation. The yolk will last for about 3 days, that's when they drop off. You might not have a high enough concentration of rotifers or are not feeding them often enough. hard to say.

I'd try the drip. It works wonders for me.

I'm still not 100% what your fish are just from the video. I know what they aren't, but hard to say what they are. heh

Nice method but not possible for me, my DT with the brood pair is in the living room with all my other tanks (LOL) and my fry tank is in the kitchen. I really don't think rots are the issue, but I do work 10 hour days and I'm single (no complaints there either) and live alone so I cannot feed them mid day. I make sure the rots are loaded morning and evening and when I get home from work there are still plenty from what I've researched. However, no one will every answer my lighting question. I know only 3 days is caused by starvation but I'm looking for the cause.

I watched your video nice method but were those pods in there with the Caulerpa algae? Are you using Caulerpa in the fry tank?

Just to clarify, I'm piggybacking the fry tank off the display tank. This makes the water parameters in the fry tank infinitely more stable throughout the day.

Unfortunately dripping rots would mean dripping rotifer culture water into the fry tank. That's a big no-no.

The final drip you see in that video was the fry tank emptying into my broodstock's sump to complete the circle. I have a nice little culerpa swamp in my sump for mechanical/biological filtration.

The pair in your video there is an ocellaris pair, very nice too! There are a couple of varients they could be with that darker color depending upon where you got them, etc, but they are beautiful!

Thank you very much Matt for posting that. Ocellaris was my first blush but with all the talk about onyx I thought maybe it's a color related thing. I'm no clown expert by far but I'm learning. I really want to try to get the next clutch passed day three (spawn 5). Any advice on lighting for the fry? I bought them a Premium Aquatic less than a year ago. They were about 1-1/2-2" long.

They are most likely SA Fancy clownfish ;)

For lighting the fry, a single fluorescent tube above your larval tank (maybe 12-20" above) should be fine. If you have or start a thread about raising them; I'd love to follow!

Got the lighting thing figured out before I read this post. Can you tell me what SA means?
 
Thanks Gresham. Sport, it is possible many times with a trained eye to recognize fish from a certain breeder (even though above I suggest that your fish could be from several sources (which is possible for that variety) the truth is that I can tell which pair of SA Fancy broodstock produced the fish above), but it also is helpful to have access to past shipment invoices too ;) I work for SA if that straightens out any confusion about the above--I have to step lightly on RC but still enjoy browsing, learning, and helping if possible :)
