you're gonna get mixed opinions. i have a 4x54w tek over my 55g. i got a clam last week, and as i was pretty excited(always wanted a clam) i posted it. i started a pretty big fight, half the people said i didn't have enough light and i was stupid for buying the clam, the other half said it was more than enough light and the clam would be fine. i figure i'll just see what happens, but i think it will be enough. i think you got enough light to keep about anything you want.

With t-5, wattage isn't as important, as it is more of a point source type of light than other flourescents. The par those bubls put out should be good for every coral you can imagine. You may even have problems initially with burning corals if they are not under high light before you aquire them. I added 2x24 t-5 to my 54 reef, and the results were amazing, even though it was only 40 watts more on top of 260 watts.

You are set for lighting. As long as you are talking about the Tek T5 light fixture from Sunlight Supply. How deep is your tank? This could affect what you could keep at what levels in the tank, but theoretically you can keep anything just depending on where you place it. If it isnt very deep you can keep most anything you want including most stuff at the bottom.

To the people that said you didnt have enough light for a clam......complete misinformation and outright ignorance.

My crocea(supposedly the most light demanding of the clams) is thriving under my t5's......at the top of the bottom third of the tank.

Of course the general statement: "can i keep corals under this light" is laden with generalities that need more definition and research.......ie which corals? where? what other things do i need to do, know and have to keep them? the list goes on and on...but if you are looking for a general answer to a very general question......then YES

Funny thing is about all this misinformation and fights (cuz your not alone, Ive stirred up quite a bit over these as well) etc. Is from people that have NEVER even tried T5. And they think that because some fishstore owner told him that he HAD to have MH, he's going to pass along the same ignorance to you, and heaven forbid you disagree...;)
Or, by chance there is someone says 'Ive used T5 before and there still not enough', I would like to question them if it was a finnex fixture or nova?

We just had the same discussion in my club forum, and I could see the line dividing. And still the same rhetoric, clams and anenome always bring this discussion when the two lights are compared. As bitter as it apparently must be for MH users, you guys/gals are just gonna have to get use to the idea of this light being as good for the average home aquaria ,

"ya but for longterm survival, youll need a MH" Complete and udder Hogwash!!:lol2:

the funny thing is, the light i had before the tek was also t-5. it was a 6x54w fixture with a single reflector behind all the bulbs. don't get me wrong, it was a nice light. built in fan, 2 switches, good ballasts(workhorse), and a nice looking black aluminum housing. but i tell you what, the individual reflectors make all the difference. i was told that even though i was losing 2 bulbs, i was actually increasing my light output by 40%. i don't know if it increased by that much, but it's pretty close. it throws out a TON of light. i don't really care if people think mh is the only way to go, they are nice lights. but some of those people were really mad when they found out i didn't have mh for the clam. they gotta realize there's more than 1 way to keep a reef tank.

T5s produce a lot more lumens par than other types of lighting, so less watts = more watts. I'm running PCs on my tank now, but if I was planning on upgrading tanks within 6-8 months I would buy some T5s for it.
